hyperbole or fact

Post by goodguy777 » Tue Jul 15, 2008 1:54 am

In dragon ball manga, how would we know if these statements were fact or hyperbole?

"Mr. Popo's statement about faster than lightning."

"Cell's statement about blowing up the solar system."
It's a gag manga! It never was nor was it meant to be scientifically sound or accurate.

Cause they are WRITTEN BY TORIYAMA HIMSELF! Not the people claiming it is hyperbole, not TOEI and not the Geeks on the net.

That was PROVEN WRONG IN THE STORY (IE it was part of the story) and was meant to be proven wrong because AKIRA TORIYAMA himself wrote it.

Lightning travels (at maximum) at half the speed of light. Traveling at 50% lightspeed would mean Popo could travel around Earth 3.5 times in one second.

For "fast as lightning", I think the word used in Japanese is kaminari, which is technically thunder.

Which is still hyperbole, as that would mean moving faster than sound, which creates a sonic boom.

That's actually a nice cap on the characters' speed in Dragonball. If there's not a sonic boom, then they're moving slower than roughly 770 miles per hour.

Well, I think the characters were...

Uh, oh. Real world logic creeping into Dragon Ball discussion.

Caps = infallibilty.
Is infallibility a word?
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

I reall doubt DragonBall was written with that amount of scientific accuracy in mind. In fact a know it wasn't, otherwise there wouldn't be things like ki attacks or capsules or aliens mating with humans or pretty much half of what happens during the course of the series.

You should say it in ALL CAPS just to be sure.

But, doubting the legitimacy of my word, how could I, in good conscience, deploy the all encompassing certainty of the CAPS LOCK KEY.

Oh, come off it. Gravity pulls things towards the center of the Earth, light bounces off objects and into the eyes to hit receptors that transmit to the brain, chemical reactions in the gut break down food into energy, and accelerating to faster than the speed of sound creates a sonic boom.

What's your arguement here? This is just a list of real world facts. You're going to have to do a lot more than that to demonstrate that things like that are consistantly applicable in a manga like DragonBall. Real world logic is often ignored.

Gravity: People can subvert energy through Bukujutsu. Planes in the Dragon World fly through unexplained "anti-gravity devices" (according to Toriyama's own explanations of the vehicles). Beings like Uranai Baba's ghosts or the souls of the dead levitate freely, and Baba's crystal ball floats on its own.

Light: It can be eaten and apparently serves as nurishment for beings like Yakon. It can also apparently be generated from nothing by people who use the Taiyo-ken.

Food: Kame-sennin gets enough energy from an ordinary diet to destroy the moon. Namekians like Piccolo apparently get that much energy simply from water. Small beans like the senzu are able to give enough nourishment as ten days worth of food, and heal all injuries, including severed limbs. Vegeta and Nappa go a year in suspended animation without eating, and Vegeta goes straight from that to 18 more days in suspended animation, and then a whole week on Planet Namek where he's never shown eating once. After Cell absorbs No.18, she's still alive and perfectly intact inside his body days later.

Speed: Goku and Kaioshin are able to move between distant planets instantly, which would entail moving faster than light. Spaceships like the Saiyan space pods and the Namekian ship, which would have to move faster than sound to cover the distances they do, aren't shown making sonic booms, and it's not like they're shown to slow down in the atmosphere or anything.

Herms the nerdraggers are not going to listen, they just want to try and put every little detail about Dragonball in their own little box of nitpicking real world physics.

Hey, The manga said Mr Popo can move faster than thunder, "ZOMG THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE, TORIYAMA IS JUST WRONG ABOUT HIS CHARACTERS111!"

Volume 23 shows a ribcage, skull and random bones from something laying in front of Vegeta as he continues to sit on the dragon balls during the final day when he finally senses Gohan and Kuririn's ki, making me think he went hunting at some point or another.

Bah, forgot that part. Or maybe I thought that was only with Raditz. Doesn't the anime have Raditz eating a bear or something weird like that?
