Go! Go! Ackman an 11-chapter manga series written and illustrated by Akira Toriyama which originally ran in Shueisha's V-Jump magazine from its July 1993 issue (released 21 May 1993, kicking off its monthly reboot) to October 1994 issue (released 22 August 1994).

At the end of its seventh chapter in the magazine's January 1994 issue, a small splash stated that the series would return in the May issue (GO! GO! ACKMAN 次回は5月号に登場です。お楽しみに!!); ultimately it returned in July 1994 issue (released that May) for a full-color chapter, at which point it then continued to its conclusion with its eleventh chapter in the October 1994 issue.

The series went on to spawn a moderate multimedia empire consisting of various sequel manga series, a short animated feature, and four video games.

Name

The title Go! Go! Ackman is typically written in English with corresponding furigana indicating the pronunciation, and is comprised of:

  • Go! Go! (which is rendered with an extended vowel sound as ゴー or gō in Japanese)
  • Ackman as a stylized transliterated name of アックマン (akkuman) in Japanese, which cheekily combines the Japanese word for "devil" (悪魔 akuma) and the English word "man" (マン man)

The name アックマン is effectively reused as-is from the Dragon Ball character of the same name.

Characters

  • Ackman (アックマン Akkuman): The "hero" of our story, a young (just 200 years old) demon looking to get out there and collect souls!
  • Gordon (ゴードン Gōdon): Ackman's winged, bat-like attendant. Named only in the credits, though his name is given in dialogue in the original manga.
  • Papa (パパ Papa): Ackman's father, also a demon.
  • Mama (ママ Mama): Ackman's mother, also a demon.
  • Medosa (メドサ Medosa): Ackman's sister, also a demon. Likely takes her name from "Medusa" by reducing the elongated vowel sound in メドーサ (Medōsa).
  • Angel (天使 Tenshi): Ackman's primary opponent, though he doesn't pose much of a threat.
  • Michael Yamada (マイケル山田 Maikeru Yamada): The "world's greatest assassin" with incredible skills (including those in calligraphy) that only waits the five minutes he's paid for.
  • Yakimo Hedel (ヤキモ・ヘーデル Yakimo Hederu): A champion fighter that the angel pays to fight Ackman in his place. It's possible that his name is taken from or influenced by fighters like Lee Hasdell (リー・ハズデル), Kimo Leopoldo (キモ・レオポルド), and/or Igor Yakimov (イゴール・ヤキモフ), widely known (including within Japan) during this time period.
  • Josephine Yamamoto (ジョセフィーヌ山本 Josefiinu Yamamoto): Hired by the angel to dance for Ackman with a little sore, sore and a little swing, swing.
  • Martians (火星人 Kasei-jin): Literal aliens from Planet Mars, who attack with a "Mars Punch" (火星パンチ Kaisei Panchi) and "Mars Flash" (火星フラッシュ Kasei Furasshu).
  • Great Demon King (大魔王様 Daimaō-sama): Converts the souls brought to him by the other demons (powering him up), and offers payment in return.
  • Marjo (マージョ Mājo): A young lady demon (still only 455 years old) who has killed thousands of people. Ackman wants to marry her. Likely takes her name from the Japanese word for "witch" (魔女 majo) and elongating the first syllable. Renamed "Witchney" in Viz's English translation of the manga.
  • Dedevil (デデビル Dedebiru): A much larger demon guy who Ackman handily trounces.

Production

Shueisha launched V-Jump as a special extra publication of Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1991 with a three-issue trial run. Akira Toriyama provided three chapters (one per issue) of the original Savings Soldier Cashman for this run. Shueisha rebooted the magazine at a different print size in 1992, this time running for four issues; Toriyama once again contributed an original manga, this time the four-chapter series Dub & Peter-1.

The magazine was rebooted once again in May 1993 (dated for July 1993), this time launching as an independent monthly magazine (a schedule it maintains to this day). Toriyama returned yet again, this time with Go! Go! Ackman, which ran for 11 chapters to completion in 1994.

While the majority of Go! Go! Ackman was produced in black-and-white, it received color title pages along the way. The seventh chapter (its first back after a several month hiatus) was produced in full color, while the eighth chapter returned to the standard color title page only. Also beginning with its seventh chapter, no chapter titles were included in the original serialization (nor were any added in its collected versions).

A short animated adaptation of early Go! Go! Ackman chapters was produced for V-Jump Festival in 1994. This feature was given an abbreviated "anime comic" adaptation in the special V-Fes '94 Bulletin Special magazine.

During this roughly year-and-change span of the Go! Go! Ackman serialization, Dragon Ball's own ongoing serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump spanned from the 25th Tenka'ichi Budōkai to Gotenks' battle against Boo in the Room of Spirit and Time (roughly chapters 427 to 483).

Chapters

Chapters ran from the monthly reboot of V-Jump with its July 1993 issue through to its seventh chapter in the January 1994 issue; during this time, all chapters were given titles. The series picked up again with its eighth chapter in the July 1994 issue, and ran to completion with its eleventh chapter in the October 1994 issue; during this time, no chapters were given titles. No additional chapter titles are provided in collected/compilation volumes, and the original seven chapter titles are removed outright.

Releases

Beyond its original V-Jump serialization, Go! Go! Ackman has been reprinted in various publications:

  • Greyscaled in the Akira Toriyama's _____piece Theatre, Vol. 3 compilation, released 04 August 1997
  • Greyscaled in the Shueisha Jump Remix re-release of the Akira Toriyama's _____piece Theatre, Vol. 3 compilation, released 21 June 2004
  • Greyscaled in the An Emperor's Feast of Akira Toriyama Vol. 1 compilation, released 08 August 2008

Go! Go! Ackman finally saw an English release as part of Viz's "Akira Toriyama's Manga Theater" in December 2021 (a hardcover print and digital release combining all three ____piece Theater volumes), translated by Greg Werner.[12]

Immediately following the completion of Toriyama's original manga, a Go! Go! Ackman "Cel Comic" began in the November 1994 issue of V-Jump, running for six chapters, written by Takao Koyama and illustrated by Satoru Iriyoshi. While not actually produced by Akira Toriyama himself, he retained the "Original Work" credit (原作 gensaku) as well as the "Editorial Supervisor" (監修 kanshū) credit[a]. The series serves as a sequel to and continuation from the original Go! Go! Ackman manga series, and was serialized in conjunction with and to promote the first Go! Go! Ackman video game released on the Nintendo Super Famicom in December 1994. After a one-month break, the series was followed by a Go! Go! Ackman 2 cel comic starting in the June 1995 issue (likewise corresponding to the second Super Famicom game) with Sumio Uetake taking the place of Koyama and joining Iriyoshi, and after another one-month break in the October 1995 issue, finally a Go! Go! Ackman 3 cel comic penned by Iriyoshi alone starting in the November 1995 issue (likewise corresponding to the third Super Famicom game). A Nintendo Game Boy game was also released in August 1995.

In an accompanying comment in Akira Toriyama's _____piece Theatre REMIX 3, Toriyama reflected on Ackman:

あー、『アックマン』はちょっと楽しかったですねー。「目つきの悪い主人公を描きたいなー」というのがあって、こんな感じに。お話も短いから、完全に嫌になる前に終わるから楽でした(笑)。でも、ものすごくくだらないネタだったなー。

Aah, "Ackman" was pretty fun. I wanted to draw a protagonist with a mean look in his eyes, and so that's how it turned out. Since the story was short, it was over before I got sick of it (laughs). But the idea was totally ridiculous, huh?

Alongside the foursome of Kajika, Isaza, Donbe, and Haya from Kajika, Dub from Dub & Peter 1, Yukio Kyūmonji and Kaede Beniya from Jiya, as well as Pack from the Dragon Ball GT television special, Ackman and his angel adversary make a cameo appearance in the fourth chapter of Toyotarō's Dragon Ball Heroes: Victory Mission series (originally published in December 2012).[13]

Naho Ooishi plays with the recycled character name in chapter 31 of the Dragon Ball SD manga series (originally published in July 2014) where the Fortuneteller Crone's fighter is called out, and in the background Ackman from Go! Go! Ackman pops up to say, "That's my name!"

In Dragon Ball Super manga chapter 22, Josephine Yamamoto appears on the incorrect talisman — a discount ticket for 50% off at a Pichi-Pichi Club — that Goku attempts to seal Zamasu away with.[15]

For the combination 72nd and 73rd entry in his "Special Project: Toyotarō Drew It!!" monthly column on the Dragon Ball Official Site in December 2023, Toyotarō provided a drawing of and comment about both Akkuman from Dragon Ball and Ackman from Go! Go! Ackman:[16][17]

This is the Ackman that Toriyama-sensei featured in a V-Jump series back in the day!

Notes

  1. ↑ This "Editorial Supervisor" (監修 kanshū) credit is generally dished out to a product Akira Toriyama either has some sort of general oversight over or occasionally even directly contributes to, but not necessarily both or even either; in many ways, it is a secondary "honorary" type credit that does not necessitate involvement. The Brief Return of Dr. Slump, a sequel manga series written by Takao Koyama and illustrated by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru (which, incidentally, ran alongside Go! Go! Ackman in V-Jump), gives Toriyama this same credit. Meanwhile, Naho Ooishi's three-chapter Episode of Bardock manga gives Toriyama this same credit, and we know that he did actually in fact provide several character designs for that work, including that of the main antagonist, Chilled.
