Jaco the Galactic Patrolman is a Dragon Ball prequel manga series written in 2013 by Akira Toriyama and originally published in Weekly Shōnen Jump. Ahead of the debut chapter's publication in the 2013 #33 issue, advertisements from Shueisha themselves and retailers explicitly described the series as, "the shocking revival of Dragon Ball!"

Each chapter was labeled with the "DB" moniker counting down from 11 (e.g., "DB-11", "DB-10", etc.), with the series' eleventh (and final standard serialization) chapter being labeled as both "+1" and "DB-1".

A supplemental bonus chapter — "Dragon Ball Minus" — was included in the series' collected edition published in April 2014.

In addition to its explicit and direct tie-in with the larger Dragon Ball franchise, Jaco the Galactic Patrolman loosely follows two prior works in the "Galactic Patrol" series which Toriyama collaborated on with longtime friend and fellow manga author Masakazu Katsura: 2008's Sachie-chan GOOD!! and 2010's Jiya.

Kōhei Ōnishi served as Toriyama's editor on Jaco the Galactic Patrolman.

The 2013 #31 issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump announced three new series set to debut in the 2013 #33 issue to mark the 45th anniversary of the magazine, including Jaco the Galactic Patrolman by Dragon Ball author Akira Toriyama, stating: "the 'legend' the whole world has been waiting for returns here!!" Subsequent descriptions were more explicit, with Shueisha's own promotion on release labeling it as: "The shocking revival of Dragon Ball!!"

In their respective 2013 #31 issue of the "Weekly Shonen Jump" digital magazine, Viz announced their forthcoming simultaneous publication of the series translated into English.

The key visual used to promote the series early on (Jaco flying with Ōmori and Tights in tow) was used in a full-page panel spread in the series' sixth chapter.

Jaco the Galactic Patrolman received a collected edition in April 2014 in two formats: a tankōbon-sized edition and a kanzenban-sized "Super Elite Edition". The collected edition featured the "Dragon Ball Minus" bonus chapter in addition to the original eleven chapters from its serialization. The collected edition was released alongside Katsura Akira, a printed volume compiling Sachie-chan GOOD!! and Jiya.

While the "Dragon Ball Minus" bonus chapter was only included within the collected edition in Japan, Viz included their English translation of the chapter in that corresponding week's 2014 #19 digital release of the "Weekly Shonen Jump" publication; it was later also included in the company's 2015 print and digital collected edition.

Legacy

Merlusa from Akira Toriyama's 2010 one-shot Kintoki makes a cameo appearance on the title page of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman's fifth chapter.

The character of Jaco himself is used in the 2015 theatrical film Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'. This story was later adapted and re-told in the 2015 television series Dragon Ball Super; later in the television series, the Galactic King and Bulma's sister Tights also make appearances.

The January 2015 issue of Shueisha's V-Jump magazine, alongside the respective game's official website, revealed Jaco himself as a first-pressing bonus unlockable character in the first Dragon Ball XENOVERSE video game. Jaco was also later made available in the game's third downloadable content pack.

Jaco returned as a playable character in Dragon Ball XENOVERSE 2 and has subsequently appeared in the Dragon Ball Heroes game series as well as the Dokkan Battle and Dragon Ball Legends mobile games.
