The Zen Exhibition Match is a preliminary match for the Tournament of Power pitting three contestants each from Universe 7 and Universe 9—the two universes with the lowest mortal levels—against each other in three consecutive non-progressing matches. After the third match, Toppo of Universe 11 challenges Goku to a match as well.
Name
The term 全覧試合 (Zenran’jiai) is a play on 天覧試合 (tenran'jiai), an exhibition match held with the emperor in attendance. 全/Zen ("all; complete; whole; entire", as in "Zen'ō", the Omni-King) replaces 天/Ten (heaven, indicating the emperor, the child of heaven).[1] Simmons adapts the pun as "Royal PreZence Matches" in his subtitles for the FUNimation home videos, emphasizing the "Zen" in his misspelling of "Presence". This was further adapted to "Zeno Expo" in the FUNimation dub. Before the reveal of the official Toei Animation translation of "Zen Exhibition Match" in the simulcast subtitles for Dragon Ball Super Episode 78, some fans used the translation "Omni-Present Matches".[2][3]
