Dragon Quest Saga: Emblem of Roto is a manga series set in the Dragon Quest universe (specifically set between the events of the original Dragon Quest video game and Dragon Quest III) with art by Kamui Fujiwara and story by Chiaki Kawamata.
The series began with the debut issue (1991 #4) of Enix's Monthly Shōnen Gangan magazine (released 12 March 1991[1][2][3][a]) and ran for six years spanning 86 chapters.
The series was collected into 21 volumes in tankōbon format contemporary with its original release, while a 15-volume kanzenban edition was later released from 2006 to 2007.
A sequel manga series, Dragon Quest Saga: Emblem of Roto - To the Children Who Inherit the Emblem, was published in Enix's Young Gangan magazine from 2004 to 2020, spanning 324 chapters (far eclipsing even the original series).
An official English translation and release of the original Dragon Quest Saga: Emblem of Roto manga series was announced by Square Enix Manga — under the localized title "Dragon Quest: The Mark of Erdrick"[b] — at New York Comic Con 2024[4], with the first volume seeing its release in September 2025[5].
Plot
Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai - The Hero Avan and the Dark Lord of Hellfire is a prequel to the original Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai manga:
- The first part of the series showcases Avan's quest to defeat Hadlar (spanning chapters 1-44) as the "Hero Arc" (勇者編 Yūsha-hen)
- The second part of the series showcases Avan traveling the world with young Hyunckel (spanning chapters 45-present) as the "Teacher Arc" or "Master Arc" (先生編は Sensei-hen)
Title
The title of Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai - The Hero Avan and the Dark Lord of Hellfire can be broken down as:
- "Dragon Quest" (ドラゴンクエスト Doragon Kuesuto): The overall franchise to which this manga series is a part of
- "The Adventure of Dai" (ダイの大冒険 Dai no Daibōken ): The sub-franchise to which this manga series is a part of; the original The Adventure of Dai was a manga series set in the Dragon Quest universe that began in 1991, and this series serves as a prequel to that one
- "The Hero Avan and the Dark Lord of Hellfire" (勇者アバンと獄炎の魔王 Yūsha Aban to Goku-en no Maō): The term "Hero" (勇者 literally meaning "brave person") widely refers to the main hero/protagonist character of each Dragon Quest entry; Avan (アバン) is the main character of this particular series (and is a character from the original The Adventure of Dai series); "Demon King" or "Dark Lord" (魔王) as a title refers to the evil character Hadlar; and "Hellfire" as a translation combines the terms for "prison" (獄) — the same as used in "Hell" (地獄) — and the word for "fire" (炎).
While not officially distributed as a series translated into English, the series has been released in multiple foreign territories, including France[6] and Spain[7], under the English title "Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai - The Hero Avan and the Dark Lord of Hellfire"; as such, we have adopted that as our English translation for this series.

Alternate fan translations have included titles such as "The Hero Avan and the Demon King of Hellfire" and "The Hero Avan and the Fiery Demon King".
A Japanese illustration card recycling the artwork from chapter 33 of the series uses English text of "Avan and the Demon King of Hellfire" across the top.

Production
Riku Sanjō (serving as the writer) and Kōji Inada (serving as the artist) produced the original Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai manga series, which ran from the 1989 No. 45 to 1996 No. 52 issues of Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump.
During this time (and about a year into the run of Dai), the same duo of Sanjō and Inada collaborated on Dragon Quest I Secret: The Dragonlord's Bari Bari Team, which debuted in the first issue of Shueisha's new V-Jump magazine — the magazine had just launched as a special extra publication of Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1990 with a three-issue trial run, and The Dragonlord's Bari Bari Team ran in the first and second issues.
For the third issue of V-Jump's initial trial run in November 1991, the same team instead produced a single-chapter one-shot called Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai Extra Edition Outside Story - The Hero Avan; the chapter told an original story with a young Avan, a character from The Adventure of Dai and was being featured at the time in the respective animated television series adaptation.
In conjunction with 2020's new animated adaptation of Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai (its second, following its original 1991 version), a prequel manga was announced to run in V-Jump. Though no significant mention of it was made prior to its debut[9], Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai - The Hero Avan and the Dark Lord of Hellfire began with a five-page prologue chapter in the magazine's November 2020 issue (released 19 September 2020)[10], which then included a splash about the manga series beginning in earnest in the following issue[8]. That following December 2020 issue (released 21 October 2020)[11]. Riku Sanjō returned in a supervisory role (receiving the 原作 gensaku credit, referring to the "Original Work" of the original Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai manga), while Yūsaku Shibata produces the manga itself.
The Hero Avan and the Dark Lord of Hellfire completed its first story arc after 44 chapters in the September 2024 issue of V-Jump, at which point it noted in a splash on the final page that the series would take a brief hiatus and would return in November (for the January 2025 issue) to begin its second story arc:[12]

The collected edition of Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai - The Hero Avan and the Dark Lord of Hellfire began in March 2021, shortly into the run of the serialization. The collected edition continues with its ongoing, regular releases as more chapters are released to fill volumes. Print and digital editions are released alongside each other, day and date.
