Dragon Quest Monsters+ is a spin-off manga series by Mine Yoshizaki (吉崎観音) set in the world of Dragon Quest focusing on the "Monsters" sub-brand.
The series ran for 35 chapters from the April 2000 through February 2003 issues[1] of Enix's Monthly Shōnen Gangan magazine.
An additional one-shot epilogue chapter was published in the August 2012 issue of Square Enix's Monthly Gangan JOKER magazine[2][3], which was subsequently included in the fifth (and final) shinsōban re-release the next month.[4]
Plot
Kleo dreams of becoming a gallant, monster-slaying hero, and when a twist of fate sees him whisked off to a strange and distant land, it seems he's finally got his chance. But the king doesn't want Kleo slaying monsters–he wants him training them, preparing mighty creatures to fight against the forces of darkness. Unfortunately, the kingdom's a little short on monsters at the moment...and Kleo's journey begins with only one sassy slime to back him up. It's a quirky quest with one majorly reluctant hero![5]
Title
The title of Dragon Quest Monsters+ can be broken down as:
- "Dragon Quest" (ドラゴンクエスト Doragon Kuesuto): The overall franchise to which this manga series is a part of
- "Monsters" (モンスターズ Monsutāzu): The sub-franchise to which this manga series is a part of; the "Monsters" series of video games began with "Terry's Wonderland" on the Nintendo Game Boy in 1998 (eventually making its way internationally as "Dragon Warrior Monsters" in 2000), and continues to this day.
- "+" (Purasu): The appended "Plus" punctuation, referring to the fact that it takes the ending of the original Dragon Quest Monsters game continuity and continues onward from there.

Monster Masters
- Kleo (クリオ Kurio): Watabou led this kid from his world to the Kingdom of GreatTree. He's supposed to train to become an M.M., or Monster Master.
- Marumo (マルモ Marumo): She is the mysterious girl that Kleo bumped into inside a cave. She doesn't seem to like Kleo very much.
- Chiisan (チーサン Chiisan)
- Machiko (マチコ Machiko)
- Dino (ディノ Dino)
- Scarab (スカラブ Sukarabu)
- Villede (ヴィルト Viruto): An M.M. that battles with bird types, and whose master has a familiar looking cane and animal companion by his feet...

Named Monsters
- Watabou (わたぼう Watabō): It's the spirit of GreatTree. Just like Terry, it's missing at the moment.
- Warabou (ワルぼう Warubō): It's the spirit of GreatLog, and has a rotten personality. Why is it watching over Kleo and his adventures?!
- Slib (スラオ Surao): This purebred slime once accompanied Terry on his journeys. Unfathomable powers hide within it.
- Jr. (Jr. / ジュニア Junia): This Small Fry had no choice but to become one of Kleo's party after his father ran wild.
- Lime (ライム Raimu): A She Slime who talks her way into Kleo's party.
- Dram (ドラム Doramu): This Drake Slime was bred by Kleo's former party members, Junior and Lime.
- Mooki (ブーキー Būkii): A Mottle King Slime who is quite the scaredy-cat. Mookie is slow, but his attack power is pretty impressive.

Production
The author and artist of Dragon Quest Monsters+, Mine Yoshizaki, is perhaps best known for the Sgt. Frog (ケロロ軍曹 Keroro Gunso) series.
Dragon Quest Monsters+ ran straight through for 36 chapters — listed as "Nights" with 35 regular "nights" and a "final night" — from the April 2000 through February 2003 issues[1] of Enix's Monthly Shōnen Gangan magazine. The series ran concurrent for a portion of its serialization with the Dragon Quest VI manga adaptation by Masaomi Kanzaki until its respective end, at which point the Dragon Quest VII manga adaptation by Fujiwara Kamui began in the February 2001 issue.

Like the original Dragon Quest Monsters game world on which it is based, Dragon Quest Monsters+ weaves its story through the world and characters of various Dragon Quest series, while focusing on a core group based around an all-new "Monster Master" whisked away from his home to the Kingdom of GreatTree. As such, various notable monsters, enemies, and hero characters show up in cameo and supporting roles alongside the all new characters created exclusively for the manga.
Releases
Following an original five-volume tankōbon release from 2000-2003, an updated five-volume shinsōban ("New Edition") of Dragon Quest Monsters+ was released in 2012. Each five-volume releases covers the same content across their respective volumes, with the exception of the fifth shinsōban receiving the epilogue chapter that had only just recently been published the prior month.
Dragon Quest Monsters+ received a full English translation and release based on its shinsōban edition, both in physical and digital forms, from Seven Seas Entertainment over the course of 2019. The series was produced with translation by Beni Axia Conrad, adaptation by David Lumsdon, and lettering by Carolina Hernández Mendoza.
