Production
Chobit — originally published in the 1983 No. 10 issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump, released 08 February 1983 in Japan — was Akira Toriyama's entry in the 11th "Jump Readers' Award" competition from 1983, in which popular Jump artists entered one-shots and readers voted for their favorite contribution. Toriyama had previously won the competition in 1981 with Pola & Roid, getting a trip to Europe out of it; although he did not win again in 1983 with Chobit, he would take third place. This was the last year until the competition was (briefly) revived in 1997 as the "Jump Readers' Cup"; Toriyama won again that year with Bubul of the Demon Village, which became the prototype for COWA!
Each issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump includes a comment from that issue's respective authors. Toriyama's comment in the issue is as follows:
今週は『Dr.スランプ』と『CHOBIT』3本の豪華4本だて!! いそがしさも格別でした。さて、面白さはどうかな!? あ〜、これでやっとプラ模作りに専念できる!!<明>
This week, it's a deluxe quadruple-header with Dr. Slump and three chapters of CHOBIT!! I was exceptionally busy. Now then, how did you like them?! Ah~, with this, I can finally devote myself to building plastic models!! <Akira>

In the fifth "Me Back When I Drew This" comic column in Akira Toriyama's _____piece Theater, Vol. 2, Toriyama describes being told how he would have plenty of time to draw his contribution so long as he is not first up; as luck would have it, of the ten authors, Toriyama gets the first slot. He is forced to draw it in a rush as everyone else gets a chance to enjoy New Year's, and to add insult to injury, it was not particularly popular.[1]
In the third Akira Toriyama's _____piece Theatre REMIX compilation, released 21 June 2004 in Japan, Toriyama reflected on Chobit:[2]

Legacy
Akira Toriyama produced a direct follow-up, Chobit 2, for the June 1983 issue of Shueisha's Fresh Jump, published 23 April 1983 in Japan.
Chobit and Chobit 2 were Toriyama's last one-shots before transitioning into what would ultimately be Dragon Ball pre-production, next producing Dragon Boy and The Adventure of Tongpoo later that same year before moving on to Dragon Ball itself in 1984.

In April 2014, in celebration of the Jaco the Galactic Patrolman collected manga volume release, Shueisha began including new comments from Akira Toriyama on the obi (paper band surrounding the book, generally promotional in nature) of his seven other (non-Dr. Slump and non-Dragon Ball) manga volumes. While each comment was only a short few lines, they provide a quick bit of insight with the occasional nod or comparison to Dragon Ball. Toriyama also contributed a new illustration for each comment showcasing a representative character crossing their arms. These comments were also briefly archived on Shueisha's promotional Jaco the Galactic Patrolman website.[5] For the first volume of his one-shot collection, Toriyama stated:
これはひどい!碧い頃にしてもひどい!ボクは読む勇気がありませんでした。赤恥の歴史その1ですな。とりやまあきら
This is awful! Even given the fact that I was still green, it's awful! I didn't have the courage to read it. This is Part 1 of my shameful history.

The original Weekly Shōnen Jump title page for Chobit was featured as the Dragon Ball Official Site's 17th entry in its The Nearly Complete Works of Akira Toriyama ongoing weekday column in February 2018.[6]
