#db was an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) channel hosted on anime.terratron.com and later on fanfic.net as part of the EFnet IRC network. The channel was founded in 1996 by "The Fantastic Four" ("Achan", "gecko", "Saiyaman", and "Wuken"), became regularly active that same year[1], and remained so for several years. The channel was notable as a central gathering place for fans to chat in real-time (as opposed to via decentralized forum-based systems such as Usenet), with many of these fans actively or going on to maintain popular Dragon Ball fan websites.
Several official and unofficial websites documenting the channel were created over the years, with the final version being launched in January 1999 by regular members "Gero" and "KamiKaze".[2]
Culture
The Dragon Ball franchise was an obvious topic of conversation in #db, with other contemporary series of the day (including other Akira Toriyama works such as the then-new Kajika) were also common. With many of the channel participants also being website operators, web design tips and tricks were also standard topical fare.
"Welcome to #db"
For every IRC channel on the Net, there lies a different atmosphere. On #db, we doubt you'll find a more diverse group. Though named in honor of the popular anime and manga series by Akira Toriyama, talking about Dragon Ball is quite rare, and instead, common topics of discussion include other anime series, movies, current events, video games, and the ever-popular topic of web page design.
Regular members would typically be granted operator ("OP") status upon joining by friends and fellow regulars, which was customary to follow with a simple "thanks."
