Name Puns

I'm trying to find out what certain characters name puns were. Partly out of curiosity and partly because some of them I need in order to expand their numbers in fanfiction(s). They're all filler/movie characters so there may be nothing concrete for them but I figure it can't hurt to ask.

Kanassa
Not even sure if that's spelled right, but whatever. None of the people here were named, but the planet was, and I'm wondering what it's a pun on.

Movie 2
Kochin and the bio warriors (whose names I completely forget) are the issue here.

Movie 4
The only name I remember from this at all is Angira... no idea what any of the other names, or any of the puns, for Slug's men are at all here.

Cooler's stuff
Salsa's rather obvious, but what the hell are Neizu and Dore (I think those are spelled right)? Also related, what's the pun for the "Big Gette Star" from movie 6?

Bojack's Crew
Yeah, all of them. I think I remember seeing something somewhere for one or two of them, but not all of them.

Movie 13
I think I remember something about Tapion being Tapioca, but what about Minosha? And what's Hoi's pun, and Hildegarn's?

Garlic Jr.'s Henchmen
This isn't so much what are they punned on, but what were all of them again? Both the movie and the saga, cause I've forgotten them. I think I remember a Mustard or something....

OK, I collected the puns for movie characters. Part of this was from my memory of the movie character name pun guide in the TV Animation Part 3 daizenshuu, but Japanese Wikipedia and Jim Breen's online dictionary were both extremely helpful. There was also a podcast episode on this, but I forgot the number. It probably would have helped...

DB Movie 1: King Gourmes is a pun on gourmet. Pasta comes from pasta. Bongo comes from vongole, as in spaghetti alle vongole

DB Movie 2: 'Lucifer’ is of course one of the names of the devil. The name itself means 'Light Bearer' and referred to the morning star, but got associated with the devil through a really long and interesting process that's too off-topic to go into in any real depth. Look into it on your own.

DB Movie 3: No original characters here, right?

DBZ Movie 1: All spices. Garlic Jr. and Ginger of course come from garlic and ginger; nikki is Japanese for cinnamon, and shanshou is Japanese pepper.

DBZ Movie 2: Dr. Uiro comes fromuirou , a regional food of Nagoya. Kishime is from kishimen, a noodle made of flat strips; it’s another Nagoya regional speciality. Ebifurya comes from ebi fry, or fried prawn . Misokattsun is from misokkasa, miso lees. I believe the theme here is that all of these foods are associated with Nagoya, capital of the Aichi Prefecture, which is where Toriyama comes from.

DBZ Movie 3: Tullece is from lettuce, Rezun is from raison, Daiz is from daizu/soybean, Amond is from almond, and Cacao is from cacao.

DBZ Movie 4: Angira, Dorodabo, Medamatcha, and Zeiun get their names from andoromeda seiun, Japanese for the Andromeda Galaxy. Kakuja is a pun on kagakusha, Japanese for ‘scientist’. I’m not quite sure what Slugg is a pun on; possibly doughnuts?...Seriously though, while some people complain that Slugg’s name is unoriginal, it’s worth noting that for a Japanese audience, a pun based on the English word for slug is far less obvious than it is for us English speakers. After all, for them the word is namekuji, and Slugg is arguably a much more creative reference to that than namekkuseijin.

DBZ Movie 5: Dore is a pun on dressing, Naise is a pun on mayonnaise, and Sauzer is a pun on Thousand Island Dressing (in fact, his name arguably should be spelled Thouser). Coola is a pun on both a cooler and kuura (食うら). There's a story behind his name that I have completely forgotten...

DBZ Movie 6: Big Gete Star is from getemono, meaning something that is a combination of different things or simply low quality; sort of similar to saying that something is ‘thrown together’.

DBZ Movie 7: All the original characters just follow the naming scheme for androids.

DBZ Movie 8: Broli is from broccoli, and Paragus is from asparagus.

DBZ Movie 9: Bojack and Bujin come from the adjective boujakubujin, meaning “arrogance or audacity”. Zangya is from zangyaku, Japanese for cruelty. Gokua and Bido are both from gokuakuhidou, meaning ‘heinous and inhuman’. Gyousan Money comes from gyousan, meaning ‘a large guanity”, and the English word ‘money’. His son Doru comes from the Japanese word for dollar, and his wife Okkane comes from okane, the Japanese word for money. Dosukoi is from dosukoi, an exclamation used by sumo wrestlers (which of course he is). If you’re a One Piece fan, you might remember the Dosukoi Panda background gag.

DBZ Movie 10: Natadei Village comes fromnata de coco, coconut milk. The girl Koko probably gets her name from the same place.

DBZ Movie 11: Bio-Broli and the Bio Warriors are of course the product of biotechnology.

DBZ Movie 12: Janenba comes from combining janen (‘evil thought’) with 波 (kanji for ‘wave’, also the ha in Kamehameha and the pa in Dodon-pa). So "Wave of evil thoughts", I guess.

DBZ Movie 13: Hildegarn gets his name from the fact that his character design made Sei’ichi Hiruda, one of the planners for the movie, go "ga~n" (that is, his jaw dropped to the flow). So Hiruda-ga~n=hirudegaan=Hildegarn. Tapion’s name comes from tapioca pudding. Planet Konatsu comes from coconuts. Similarly, Minoshia is a slightly altered reversal of yashi no mi, or “palm tree fruit”. Interestingly, directly reversing Minoshia’s name gets you ashi nomi, which would mean “only legs”. I don’t know where Hoi comes from, but there is a youkai called the hoi-hoi-bi (‘hoi-hoi fire’); it’s a ball of fire that appears at ruins if you call out “Hoi hoi!” two or three times. Also, I seem to recall that Uranai Baba’s chant does go something like “hoi hoi hoi yo hoi hoi sa”, so maybe ‘hoi’ is a chant associated with magic?

Got handy files sitting around for lots of stuff ^_~. Might as well just head through all the movies/features... some information might have been updated through the Super Exciting Guide books since Julian and I compiled this stuff, so someone with them handy might want to double-check and update accordingly. Leaving out the movies with no original characters, or ones with descriptive names with no puns (like DBZ movie 7).

I'll update the post accordingly as we move on and confirm stuffage. Hell, might as well consider this our central resource as we make our way toward the wiki and other pages and projects that a few of us have in the plans for both the near future and in the not-so-near-future-but-discussed-often-enough. Yeah. Just sayin'.

I'll even make it all pretty with kana and sources (if you include them) as stuff rolls in.

• Men-men (the Baron's cousin) = not sure about the intended pun, but means "endless" or "all around"
• Korii Hakase = Corey/Korey + hakase (doctor, professor)
• Nain/Nein (Dr. Corey's pretty assistant) = German for "No", the joke being that a German is a (mad) scientist...?

DBZ MOVIE 12: Various Puns

• Janenba = janen (wicked thoughts) + ba ("place" or "given form"... maybe?)
• Dokusaisha = "Dictator"; this is special, because the "Doku" kanji can be used as shorthand for "Germany"... he's not actually named "Hilter"
• Paikuhan = was this confirmed as "pie + eat + rice"...? Or was it paigufan (spare ribs & rice)...?
• Veku = bad fusion of "Goku" + "Vegeta"
• Gogeta = correct fusion of "Goku" + "Vegeta"

DBZ MOVIE 13: Various Puns

• Tapion = play on tapioka (tapioca), which was his name in pre-production
• Minoshia = As Herms noted, "yashi no mi" = "palm tree fruit", but there's also it being a reversal of "ashi no mi" (legs portion), the part of Hildegarn sealed inside him; which is confirmed as the "intended" pun, if any at all...?
• Hildegarn/Hirudegarn/Hirudegan = "Hiruta" (a staff member) + "gaan" (sound for jaw hitting the floor, his reaction upon seeing the character design
• Planet Konatsu = play on "coconuts"

I suppose not normally, but I've seen the explanation before and it sort of stuck, so now I can't see it without recognizing it.

DBZ MOVIE 9: Vices!... and some other stuff

No wonder I was never able to figure out the ones for Bojack's crew. Though I'm surprised I never stumbled across Zangya's while hunting for some of my own. They are awesome, though. Plus, they're perfect for me. They leave a lot of room for expansion and they match the role I've got for them in one fic. Sweet.

"Big Gete Star" = "big" (OK, that one's obvious) + "gete" (from getemono, or "cobbled together", which perfectly describes it) + "star"

Admittedly when I first watched movie 6 I just assumed "Big Gete Star" was supposed to sound a bit like "Spaghetti Star." (And to me the idea was supported by the assorted "spaghetti-like" bindings/cords/whatever that I recall being inside the star...so I figured it worked.) I know next to no Japanese so of course without the knowledge of where "gete" comes from "spaghetti" was about the best I could do at the time.
I haven't watched that one in quite a while (years...) but it's good to know what the actual pun is...and it makes a lot more sense...

According to Japanese Wikipedia, Ghaster/Ghastly (ガステル) is a pun on "Gas Table" (ガステーブル), which I guess makes sense considering he can fly around on two fireballs.

DBZ MOVIE 4: Stuff

• Slug = Slug (suraggu)
• Medamatcha = play on eyeballs (medama), since he has really big ones
• Totally blanking on the rest right now, and I for some reason don't have them in this file...

Slug's three main underlings were based on the "Andromeda Galaxy" (アンドロメダ星雲; Andoromeda Seiun). Although you're right, they do individually have name puns as well.

I like to think of the Shamo name pun as an idiom on "a sitting duck". As far as Angoru, I have no idea. Moa... that sounds plausible.

Continuing on from the last movie, Coola came to appear again in “Clash!! 10 Billion Powerful Warriors”. You’d normally think that since his younger brother is Freeza (Freeza=freezer) that his name would be Coola (cooler), but it’s not that simple. The truth is that it involves the Shizuoka dialect. The producer Mr. Morishita, who is from Shizuoka, was worried that “Cooler” would be too direct, and remembered that in the dialect of his hometown one said “meshi demo kuura” when eating[sorta equivalent to “Let’s chow down”, I suppose]. Because of this, they used the Shizuoka dialect…and so they decided on the name Coola [Kuura]!! To think that it was so complicated a process…But at the same time there are also amazingly direct names like the Big Gete Star, called that because it was a huge thrown-together [getemono] planet.

That should be spelled "Kanassa" (Xyex had it right the first time). Incidentally, the Kanassian Tooro (the guy who gives Bardock the ability to see the future) is named for toro.

So checking the movie character name pun table in Daizenshuu 10, it seems we've already covered most of the info in it, but it does say that Android No.13 was named specifically because of 13 being considered an unlucky number.

I doubt other DB forums talk this well about name puns, but I have to hope that even cursory fans of the series know that name puns are one of the big themes in Dragon Ball.
