Dragonball Evolution is a 3D fighting game based on the live-action theatrical film of the same name, developed by Dimps and published by Bandai Namco for the Sony PlayStation Portable originally released 19 March 2009 in Japan and 10 November 2009 in North America.

Dragonball Evolution would be the final Dragon Ball title developed by Dimps for the PlayStation Portable, with Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budōkai releasing in 2006 and its sequel Dragonball Z: Shin Budōkai 2 releasing the following year. Though not a sequel to these two previous games, Dragonball Evolution is built on the same engine and thus inherits most of their mechanics.

Gameplay

Dragonball Evolution's plays similarly to Dimps Shin Budokai series for the PlayStation Portable, running on a very similar game engine. Fights take place in a 3D arena, where characters can strafe and side-step around their opponents to dodge attacks. Along with light and heavy physical attacks, players can also use Ki to unleash special attacks or guard using Aura Burst.

Unlike the Shin Budokai series, there are no transformations and characters are unable to ascend to fight in the air.

Game Modes

Story: Fight through 22 story battles retelling the story of the Dragon Ball Evolution movie.

Arcade: Choose a character and fight through a set of 8 battles

Net Battle: Fight against other players wirelessly.

Training: Practice against Computer-Controlled opponents.

Mission: Complete fights under special conditions.

Gallery: View design sketches, storyboards, and set photos from the movie.

Survival: Fight an endless wave of fighters and for as long as possible.

Story

Dragonball Evolution's story mode is split into 12 acts that roughly follow the plot of the 2009 theatrical film.

Two bonus acts are also available, which detail the return of Piccolo as Neo Piccolo, and takes place after the events of the movie.

Legacy

Dragonball Evolution released to lackluster sales, selling around 1,200 copies in its first week^[1] and 13,000 copies across its lifetime in Japan^[2], making it the worst performing Dragon Ball title on the PlayStation Portable.

Chris Roper from IGN gave the game a 2 out of 10, noting its sub-par story-mode presentation and the lack of combat depth.^[3]. Austin Shau from GameSpot similarly gave the game a score of 3.5 out of 10, citing its drab colors, textures and cutscenes and easily exploited computer opponents.^[4]
