Dragon Ball SD is a spin-off manga series written and illustrated by Naho Ooishi running in Shueisha's Saikyō Jump magazine. The series adapts events from the original story in humorous new ways with "chibi" or "super deformed" (the titular "SD") styled characters. The occasional bonus chapter, generally published in supplemental booklets or guest appearances in other magazines, tells original and "what if?" storylines.
Dragon Ball SD was a launch title for Saikyō Jump and the debut official work for Naho Ooishi, and has appeared in each and every issue of the magazine with the exception of a planned break from the January 2017 issue.
The first four issues of the series were released in Saikyō Jump's quarterly format and feature specific major events from the original series. Starting in January 2012, the magazine (and therefore Dragon Ball SD itself) was moved to a monthly format, and the series was rebooted back to the beginning of the original Dragon Ball storyline. The magazine (and once again therefore Dragon Ball SD itself) shifted to a bimonthly format beginning with the November 2014 issue.
