The 21st Tenka'ichi Budōkai is the first martial arts competition in Dragon Ball. At the time of the 21st, the Tenka'ichi Budōkai was held once every five years,[1] but there was such a high number of participants at the 21st, the frequency was changed to three years.[2]
Overview
Background
On the first day of Goku and Kuririn's training with Muten Rōshi, he tells them that if they do not shirk on their training, he will enter them into the Tenka'ichi Budōkai in eight months. He warns them that winning should not be their goal; their goal should only be to enter, and do their best; winning would be unrealistic.[3] However, they surpass his expectations, and when he realizes they might actually have a chance of winning the tournament, he decides to enter in disguise to prevent that, fearing a win might go to their heads and make them think they have no room to improve.[4] When he watches Goku defeat Namu, he realizes that after all his efforts, he still might lose![5]
Tournament
Preliminaries
The preliminaries are held in a private hall without any spectators. They narrow the field down from 137 total participants to eight finalists. The participants are divided into four blocks, and two winners from each block proceed to the finals.
Rules
The preliminary rules are as follows:
- Each match will last one minute. If there is no clear victor at the end of one minute, the judges will decide the winner.
- Killing is prohibited, as is the use of weapons.
- Any of the following will constitute a clear loss:
- Falling out of the ring.
- Losing consciousness.
- Pleading for mercy.
- Crying.[note 1]
Each contestant draws a slip with a number on it to determine the fighting order.[1][6]
