The Lonely Future Warrior!! Trunks is a single-chapter "Original Illustrated Story" — primarily comprised of text with accompanying illustrations — written by Aya Matsui and illustrated by Minoru Maeda, originally (and thus far exclusively) published within the "Anime Comic" adaptation of the first Dragon Ball Z television special, released by Shueusha in Japan 12 January 1993.

Synopsis

During the time that Vegeta reenters the Room of Spirit of Time on his own, Trunks reflects on his own past and timeline, the strong will of his mother, their goal of defeating the Artificial Humans, meeting friends and family upon returning to the past, and his strained relationship with his father Vegeta.

Three products under the "Original Illustrated Story" (オリジナルイラストストーリー Originaru Irasuto Sutōrī) line were written and illustrated by various members of the anime production staff and printed in miscellaneous publications during the time of Dragon Ball's original manga serialization and television series production.

The first, In the Name of Demon King Piccolo, was written by Takao Koyama with illustrations by Minoru Maeda in 1989. The short, six-page story was published in a special "mook" (combination magazine/book) for the Dragon Ball series that covered various aspects of the franchise. It focused on the second Piccolo, beginning with his birth and covering events up through the arrival of the Saiyans.

The second, High Pride!! Saiya Prince Vegeta, was produced by the same team of Koyama and Maeda in 1991, and published in the second of the special "mook" releases for the franchise. It focused on Vegeta, beginning with his childhood back on his Saiyan home world and covering events up through the battle on Planet Namek.

The third, The Lonely Future Warrior! Trunks, was produced by a slightly new team in 1993, with the story written by Aya Matsui and illustrations again by Maeda. As opposed to the first two original illustrated stories which focused both on illustrations and text, the third is primarily text with the occasional picture; in this regard, it is somewhat like a "light novel" (only much shorter). Also unlike the previous two stories, the Trunks chapter was published as a bonus inclusion in the Anime Comic adaptation of the first Dragon Ball Z television special.

In July 2008, a collaboration between Daizenshuu EX and Kanzentai (the two predecessors to what would ultimately fuse into Kanzenshuu in 2012) released separate text-only and scanlation versions, respectively, of The Lonely Future Warrior! Trunks. This release was accompanied by a podcast episode discussing the history of the Original Illustrated Stories and the Trunks story in particular.
