The Dragon Ball Z 30th Anniversary Collector's Edition is the first complete high-definition remaster of the Dragon Ball Z anime in the original 4:3 aspect ratio. It was produced by Funimation six years following their release of their 16:9 Blu-rays (2013), which was itself the first complete high-definition remaster of the series.[a] The special features are recycled from the 2013 Blu-rays with the exception of "Celebrities Talk: 30 Years of Dragon Ball Z".
On 02 March 2019, Funimation and Toei Animation announced plans to release Dragon Ball Z on Blu-ray for its 30th anniversary.[1][2] The campaign originally called for 2,500 commitments before the Blu-rays could be produced,[3] but that was adjusted to 3,000 commitments ten days later.[4] A FAQ was added to the website clarifying that the maximum number of Collector's Editions they could produce was 6,000 and that orders would ship "before the holidays". When the reservation period ended on 05 May 2019, Funimation had sold about 4,500 units.[b] No exact release date was ever given for the United States, but fans began to receive their pre-ordered sets in early November.[6]
On 05 April 2019, Funimation released the first trailer featuring footage from the new remaster.[7] The remastering techniques in evidence, such as heavy digital noise reduction, caused a significant fan backlash,[8][9][10] which prompted Funimation to respond with a defense of their work.[11] The defense did little to stop the campaign to boycott the Collector's Edition[12] which likely contributed to Funimation's failure to sell out the maximum 6,000 units before the US reservation period ended.
On 20 September 2019, MangaUK announced that they would have 750 sets available for pre-order[13] with a release date of 25 November 2019.[14] In May 2020, Madman Entertainment announced that they would have a limited number of Collector's Editions to sell on 22 July 2020.[15][c]
The 30th Anniversary 4:3 remaster was subsequently re-released in individual seasons between 03 November 2020 and 02 March 2021 in the United States and later in the United Kingdom and Australia. The special features from Disc 5 of Season 9 were omitted in this re-release, making "Celebrities Talk: 30 Years of Dragon Ball Z" exclusive to the Collector's Edition.

The four boxes of the Collector's Edition do not perfectly correspond with the nine arbitrary "seasons" of Funimation's previous releases of Dragon Ball Z.

- ↑ Twitter user John Dutton posted the latest known screenshot of the funding progress bar showing that Funimation had no more than 1,822 sets remaining on 01 May 2019, and he claimed to have seen the number drop below 1,500 before the end of the preorder period on the 5th.[5]
- ↑ The collector's edition was still available abroad when the individual seasons went on sale, and as late as 24 May 2021, when a reddit user (now deleted) asked whether they should buy the collector's edition or some other version.[16] Both the MangaUK offer and the Madman offer were verified to be no longer available on 08 June 2021.
