Dragon Ball The Movies Blu-ray is Toei Animation's only high-definition remaster of the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z theatrical films.[a] Toei's remaster was released directly to Amazon Prime and Netflix in Japan on 27 July 2018,[1] and the physical Blu-ray releases followed in November, December, and January.
The Blu-ray release of the films features high-definition audio similar to the Dragon Box The Movies release, as opposed to the optical audio that was included with the Amazon-Netflix release. However, the Blu-ray release also includes some censorship that was not present in the stream release.[2]
Toei also remastered the Dragon Ball Z TV specials at the same time, though they were not made available on Netflix and Amazon. Toei has yet to release the specials on Blu-ray in Japan, but they were released by Kazé in Germany on 15 April 2021 following their release of Toei's movie remasters, the first release of this remaster outside Japan.
Dragon Ball Z TV Special 1 was presented in US theaters along with Movie 12 on 03 November 2018 as part of the promotion for Dragon Ball Super: Broly.[3][b] During the promotion of this event, Fathom Events posted two videos on YouTube of footage from the remastered Bardock special.[4][5] Within a few days,[6] Animax in Japan announced that they would be airing an HD remaster of the special on 27 January 2019.[7] Special 2 briefly appeared on GYAO, a Japanese streaming service, in April 2019,[8] but it was quickly taken down.[9]

Censorship
On 25 January 2019, Toei Animation acknowledged certain instances of visual censorship in the Blu-ray release of Dragon Ball Z's 11th and 12th theatrical films that was not present in the Amazon-Netflix release. The acknowledgement came by way of an apology for the packaging's descriptive text.[10]

本件商品のジャケットに「この作品には、映像、台詞の一部に、現在では不適当と思われる表現もありますが、作品の歴史的価値を重視し、現存する原版のとおり収録してあります。」という注意文を掲載していました。-Content of Visual Edits-
Approaching the release of the products in question, so that they could be enjoyed by everyone even more thoroughly, as well as out of consideration for their influence upon children, a review of visual content was conducted. As a result of this review, versions of the films which contained edited expressions were included in the final products.
-Jacket Description-
Jackets of the products in question were printed with the following warning: "Certain parts of images and dialogue may contain material considered inappropriate for modern audiences. However, out of respect for historical value of the works, their original editions are maintained."
Those wishing to seek a refund were able to fill out the respective form on Toei's website through January 2020. New jackets with an "accurate" description could also be requested, and new versions printed that day moving forward would have the adjusted text. No mention was made of replacing discs with unaltered content or future re-releases.[2]

- ↑ The films had previously only been remastered in HD by Funimation for their Dragon Ball Z Double Feature Blu-rays. Funimation also remastered the Dragon Ball movies, but these are only available through their streaming service; however they were released physically on Blu-ray in Mexico with Spanish audio and subtitles.
- ↑ Fathom Events also presented Dragon Ball Z Movie 8 on 15 September 2018. The Fathom Events announcement came in June 2018, but it was not known that Broli would be the subject of the new Dragon Ball Super film until July. It was revealed that Bardock would have a significant part in the film in October, and Gogeta was not officially confirmed until December, after photographs of the theater screen leaked from the November premiere.
