Kurilien is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball franchise, notably designed by Akira Toriyama and appearing exclusively as an enemy character in the series' first Nintendo Famicom game, Dragon Ball: The Mystery of Shenlong.
Biography
Following his initial search for the Dragon Balls, Son Goku competes in a kung-fu tournament and later makes his way into space with Bulma's Dragon Radar to track down the four-star ball. Toninjinka dispatches Kurilien, the "number-one hitman in the universe," to exact revenge on Goku.[1] Though given this title, Kurilien is actually quite weak and is easily handled by the player (and therefore Goku) in the game, provided the player avoids Kurilien's boomerang-style attack from two of his four arms.[2]
さあっ!うちゅう1のこらしやくリリアン!こいつをちまつりにしてちょうがい!
Now, number-one hitman in the universe, Kurilien! Make him your first victim!
— Toninjinka, The Mystery of Shenlong
Kurilien seemingly makes a second appearance during the last level of the game, Konpei Tower, though he is not directly referred to by name in this encounter.
Name
Kurilien's name (クリリアン, Kuririan) is a clear combination of Kuririn (クリリン, kuririn) and the English word "alien" (エイリアン, eirian).
Production

Kurilien was designed by original Dragon Ball author Akira Toriyama, with said design appearing twice in print in December 1986: in the game's official guide book (under the Jump Comics Selection imprint), as well as in the 22nd issue of Bird Land Press (Toriyama's official fanclub newsletter).
Kurilien's second in-game appearance looks more like Toriyama's character design than he does in Goku's first encounter, with his Oorin Temple uniform clearly depicted in the game sprite.
Performance
Kurilien is unvoiced in his one and only appearance.
Notable Appearances
Thus far, Kurilien exclusively appears in Dragon Ball: The Mystery of Shenlong on the Nintendo Famicom, originally released in Japan in November 1986.
Notes
Alongside two other designs, Akira Toriyama's original design for Kurilien was featured as the Dragon Ball Official Site's 85th entry in its The Nearly Complete Works of Akira Toriyama ongoing weekday column in May 2018.[3]
