==Title==
While the basic title of the series is similar to past versions, other than its 1997 identification, it is differentiated slightly by putting the full title in ''katakana'' as ドクター スランプ (''Dokutā Suranpu'') with accompanying English text of "Dr. Slump"; this is in contrast to the original 1980 series, which generally stylizes this as Dr.スランプ with ドクター (''Dokutā'') ''furigana'' alongside the shortened "English" phrasing/abbreviation.
The 1981 television series adaptation of the original manga was titled Dr.スランプ アラレちゃん (''Dokutā Suranpu Arare-chan'') — or "Dr. Slump: Arale-chan" — whereas the 1997 reboot, like this manga series, was titled in ''katakana'' as ドクター スランプ (''Dokutā Suranpu'') with accompanying English text of "Dr. Slump".

The ''Dr. Slump'' reboot manga uses the same revised character designs as that year's new television series.

The series received regular cover artwork on ''V-Jump'' over the course of its run, including with its debut chapter for the December 1997 issue (drawn by Yamamuro).

The 1997 Dr. Slump manga is a 30-chapter manga series written by Takao Koyama (小山高男) and (primarily) Yoshimi Narita (成田良美), illustrated by Tadayoshi Yamamuro (山室直儀), and with editorial supervision from Akira Toriyama (鳥山明).

Running alongside and in conjunction with a corresponding television series reboot that same year, the manga series serves as a reboot of the original Dr. Slump manga series, and originally ran from the December 1997 to July 2000 issues of Shueisha's monthly V-Jump magazine (with one announced break across the January and February 2000 issues[a]).

Though the series never received a traditional collected volume release, a reprinted version was included as a bonus alongside the 1997 television series reboot's DVD box set in March 2008.

Title

While the basic title of the series is similar to past versions, other than its 1997 identification, it is differentiated slightly by putting the full title in katakana as ドクター スランプ (Dokutā Suranpu) with accompanying English text of "Dr. Slump"; this is in contrast to the original 1980 series, which generally stylizes this as Dr.スランプ with ドクター (Dokutā) furigana alongside the shortened "English" phrasing/abbreviation.

The 1981 television series adaptation of the original manga was titled Dr.スランプ アラレちゃん (Dokutā Suranpu Arare-chan) — or "Dr. Slump: Arale-chan" — whereas the 1997 reboot, like this manga series, was titled in katakana as ドクター スランプ (Dokutā Suranpu) with accompanying English text of "Dr. Slump".

Production

While the Dr. Slump reboot manga is not directly named, the November 1997 issue of V-Jump contains a small splash of text in its next-issue-preview noting that a "super big new series" is set to begin that following issue:[1]

特報!! 超ビッグ新連載次号よりスタート!

Breaking news!! A super big new series will start in the next issue!

The series debuted in the following issue, running regularly until its final chapter in the July 2000 issue, incidentally the magazine's seventh anniversary issue tracking back to its monthly reboot in 1993.

Picking up only about a year and a half after the conclusion of the sequel series The Brief Return of Dr. Slump (which also ran in Shueisha's V-Jump magazine, wrapping up after 40 chapters in the July 1996 issue), while writing duties remained and began with Toriyama-verse stalwart Takao Koyama before shifting occasionally to Yoshimi Narita, art duties shifted to equally-Toriyama-verse stalwart Tadayoshi Yamamuro.

Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, who provided the artwork for The Brief Return of Dr. Slump before this reboot series, was at this point a handful of chapters in to the Savings Soldier Cashman reboot manga also running in V-Jump, which ran concurrently alongside the Dr. Slump reboot manga for some time.

Based on this production process, and as listed on each chapter title page and collected volume release:

  • Koyama and Narita received the "Script" (脚本 kyakuhon) credit.
  • Yamamuro received the "Drawing" or "Painting" (繪 e) credit.
  • Toriyama received the "Original Author" or "Original Work" (原作 gensaku) credit, indicating his role as the creator of the original Dr. Slump manga series. He additionally received the "Supervisor" or "Editorial Supervisor" (監修 kanshū) credit; as a point of comparison, Toriyama received the same credit many years later for Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock, which was written and illustrated by Naho Ooishi. This dual-credit is the same as Toriyama received on The Brief Return of Dr. Slump prior to this series.

The first chapter's title page contains a giant splash promoting the new television series also set to begin that November. The first five chapters' title pages also contain splashes noting that a special telephone card with that respective title page illustration was available for 100 winners to potentially receive.

The Dr. Slump reboot manga uses the same revised character designs as that year's new television series.

The series received regular cover artwork on V-Jump over the course of its run, including with its debut chapter for the December 1997 issue (drawn by Yamamuro).

Chapters

In line with the style established with the original Dr. Slump manga series, each chapter's title is followed by の巻 (no maki), indicating that it is the "volume" (or here "chapter") in which those events take place. This appendix has been ignored in the following chapter title translations.

Notes

  1. Splash text at the bottom of chapter 25 in the December 1999 issue states: 次号は、ちょっただけお休みだよ! ("We'll be taking a little break next issue!").
  2. Roughly shares its title with episode 6 of the corresponding television series.
