Super Saiyan 2 is a further transformation within the Super Saiyan line, typically identifiable by more prominent hair spikes and an electric-like charge around the respective character. The transformation makes its debut as Son Gohan battles Cell.
Name

Spelling
As with similar transformations, the "Super" in "Super Saiyan 2" is written with the kanji 超 (chō), with accompanying furigana of スーパー (sūpā) indicating a pronunciation of the English word "super" rather than a native Japanese reading.
Naming History
Following its debut in chapter 409 with Son Gohan's transformation battling Cell, what we later know as "Super Saiyan 2" is not actually named as such until chapter 474, where Son Goku demonstrates various stages of transformation in a conversation with Boo. Beginning with regular Super Saiyan, Goku powers up further stating:
そしてさっきみせた超サイヤ人を超えた超サイヤ人。。。超サイヤ人2ってとこかな
This is a Super Saiyan that has surpassed Super Saiyan... Super Saiyan 2, you could call it.
— Son Goku, Dragon Ball chapter 474[1]
In the meantime, official publications had adopted a naming structure — 段階 (dankai) or "Grades" — for the increasing levels of transformations. This structure was based on dialog from Goku in Dragon Ball chapter 387, where he demonstrates the stage Vegeta uses against Cell, going on to state that "one further grade of transformation is possible", at which point he demonstrates the stage that Trunks uses against Cell.[3]
Of note, the Anime Comic release for the Trunks television special includes a supplementary "Super Saiyan Evolution Theory Timetable" column recapping the various Super Saiyan transformations in existence up to the point of its publication in May 1993. The "Grades" naming structure is present here, with "Grade II" and "Grade III" referring to the forms showcased by Vegeta and Trunks, respectively (and would be later reinforced by inclusions in guides such as Dragon Ball Daizenshuu 2: Story Guide and Dragon Ball GT: Perfect File Volume 1). With no other names in the series itself to use, the column extrapolates this "Grade" naming structure further, naming the "at ease" state that Goku and Gohan adopt leading up to the Cell Games as "Super Saiyan Grade IV" (later named "Full Power Super Saiyan"), and the transformation Gohan showcases against Cell as "Grade V".

Attributes
"A power-up he acquired through his training with Kaio-sama in the Other World. During his bout with Vegeta in the Buu arc, he transformed into this mode so that could put out his highest power." -- Daizenshuu 2 "His strength blows away the ground with just a kick." -- Daizenshuu 2
"This form has power that surpasses Super Saiyan in all ways. Gohan naturally transformed into this form through his anger at Cell's brutal actions, while Goku and Vegeta learned it through harsh training." -- Daizenshuu 7
"A type of warrior who possess power surpassing Super Saiyan 1 in power, speed, and all other points!! However, it seems to not provide a rapid increase, so after Goku awakened to Super Saiyan 3, he would often skip over 2 and transform straight from 1 to 3!! In visual terms as well there’s not all the much different from 1, these differences consisting of the sparks in the aura and the hair on the head standing up even straighter than before!" -- DBGT Perfect File Vol. 1
Super Saiyan 2 has two times the strength as a regular Super Saiyan -- SEG
