M13 is the official catalogue number of a piece of background music (BGM) composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi for the Dragon Ball anime in 1986. The piece debuted in Dragon Ball Episode 11 which was broadcast on 07 May 1986.

Overview

The full composition is part b of the suite entitled "The Strict Training of the Turtle Hermit School", which is track #14 on disc #2 of the Daizenshuu.

M13 is given the title "Severe Training" on kenisu's Magicant,[1] the most common source for fan titles of Kikuchi's compositions. The piece was assigned the Kanzenshuu catalogue number of K-98 based on its placement in the series.

Compositional Analysis

M13's setting in F Minor is extremely tenuous. The 5-1 motion in the timpani and trombone in the arc's main key is the only justification for calling F Minor the tonal center. The harmony is largely parallel and the melody is dissonant. Eleven of the twelve tones are used, and the only missing one is A, the third in F Major. The piece ends on a cluster chord including all of the tones used in the piece.
