S.H.Figuarts is a line of action figures produced by Bandai under the Tamashii Nations label. A Dragon Ball Kai (rebranded as Dragon Ball Z in 20XX) collection launched in 2009, followed later by Dragon Ball Super and Dragon Ball collections.
Production
In February 2008, Bandai began production on the S.H.Figuarts (Simple Style and Heroic Action) line in with a line of Kamen Rider Next action figures. By mid-2009, promotional images of a Dragon Ball Kai branded Piccolo figure began circulating,[1] followed by its release on 21 November 2009.

- Beginning with their Artificial Human No. 16 figure, Bandai employed a new type of waist articulation which allows the legs a greater range of motion by creating a cut that runs along the leg all the way up to the waist. With this greater articulation, the legs no longer must move down and out along a ball joint to move forward, and can lift up to a 90° angle perpendicular to the torso. Despite No. 16's enhanced articulation, many future releases continued to use the older ball-joint style waists. It wasn't until the battle-damaged Super Saiyan Goku figure that the series would begin to adopt this newer articulation across the entire line.
- Shenlong and the Dragon Ball line
- Due to the incredible popularity of Dragon Ball in the west, discontinued releases often experience major price hikes in the aftermarket. For instance, the San Diego Comic-Con 2011 Super Saiyan Goku in mint condition can list for over US$2,500.00 through online resellers.
- The Tamashii Nations brand has a presence at most major general pop culture and toy conventions, in which they preview upcoming and prototype Dragon Ball figures. A number of figures shown during these conventions have never released, including Champa, Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta, Goku wearing his light-blue gi from the end of the series, and many others.
