The Dragon Ball Z 30th Anniversary Collector's Edition is the first complete high-definition remaster of the Dragon Ball Z anime in the original 4:3 aspect ratio. It was produced in the United States by Funimation six years following their their 16:9 Blu-ray release (2013), which was itself the first complete high-definition remaster of the series.[a] The Collector's Edition included a hardcover art book and an exclusive Goku Grandista figure. The special features were recycled from the 2013 Blu-rays with the exception of "Celebrities Talk: 30 Years of Dragon Ball Z".

In the February 2019 issue of License Global, it was revealed that there would be a collector's edition of Dragon Ball Z forthcoming from Funimation for the series's 30th anniversary.[1] Then on 02 March 2019, Funimation and Toei Animation officially announced their plans for the Blu-ray collector's edition.[2][3] The campaign originally called for 2,500 commitments before the Blu-rays could be produced,[4][5] but that number was adjusted to 3,000 ten days later.[6][7]
On 05 April 2019, Funimation released the first trailer featuring footage from the new remaster.[8] It was verified that the aspect ratio of the remaster would be the original 4:3, the pre-order link was opened, and a new FAQ was added to the website clarifying that the maximum number of Collector's Editions they could produce was 6,000 and that orders would ship "before the holidays". Over 1,000 reservations were made on the first day,[b] and over 2,000 by the second.[10]
The remastering techniques in evidence in the trailer, such as heavy digital noise reduction (DNR) and a sharpening filter, caused a significant fan backlash,[9][11][12] which prompted Funimation to respond with a defense of their work.[13] The defense did little to stop the campaign to boycott the Collector's Edition[14] which likely contributed to Funimation's failure to sell out the maximum 6,000 units. The minimum goal of 3,000 units was not reached until 12 April 2019,[15] and when the US reservation period ended on 05 May 2019, Funimation had only sold about 4,500 units.[c]
No exact release date was ever given for the United States, but fans began to receive their pre-ordered sets in early November.[18] On 02 November 2019, the first screenshots from the final product were posted online, revealing that Funimation had added an artificial grain filter in an attempt to cover up the result of the automated noise reduction process; however this had unintended consequences[19] and did nothing to restore the detail that had been destroyed by DNR.[20]
On 20 September 2019, MangaUK announced that they would have 750 sets available for pre-order[21] with a release date of 25 November 2019.[22] Those who ordered from the UK received a different, non-exclusive Goku figure.[17] In May 2020, Madman Entertainment announced that they would have a limited number of Collector's Editions to sell in Australia on 22 July 2020.[23][d]

The 30th Anniversary 4:3 remaster was subsequently re-released in individual seasons between 03 November 2020 and 02 March 2021 in the United States and later in the United Kingdom and Australia. The special features from Disc 5 of Season 9 were omitted in this re-release, making "Celebrities Talk: 30 Years of Dragon Ball Z" exclusive to the Collector's Edition.
Contents
The four disc books of the Collector's Edition do not perfectly correspond with the nine arbitrary "seasons" of Funimation's previous releases of Dragon Ball Z.

In the February 2019 issue of License Global, it was revealed that there would be a collector's edition of Dragon Ball Z forthcoming from Funimation for the series's 30th anniversary, with a quote from Funimation's approvals representative from Toei Animation, Lisa Yamatoya.[1]
In February, along with Funimation, we're going to have a 30th anniversary collectible home video release announcement.
— Lisa Yamatoya
However, the announcement did not come until March. On 01 March 2019 at 5:33 P.M. (US Central), Funimation tweeted an image of the 4-Star Dragon Ball with the text, "Something legendary is coming..."[25] At 5:34, Toei Animation tweeted an image of the 3-Star Ball with the same text.[26] On 02 March 2019, Toei tweeted out a link to Funimation's announcement of their plans to remaster Dragon Ball Z and release it in the 30th Anniversary Collector's Edition, along with an image of the 4-star and 3-star balls side by side.[3] Funimation asked fans for their email addresses to show interest; the campaign originally called for 2,500 commitments before the Blu-rays could be produced,[4][5] but this was changed to 3,000 commitments ten days later.[6][7]

F.A.Q.
WHY HOLD A RESERVATION CAMPAIGN?
Due to the high costs associated with the set, we need to guarantee a minimum number to print. We think a DBZ 30th anniversary set is an awesome idea, but we need to measure the interest!
WHY2,5003,000 UNITS?
This is the minimum build order for sets from our printers. This minimum makes sure that we can sell the product to you at an affordable price.
But wait…didn’t you say 2,500?
Sorry! We let Goku do the math and, well…mistakes were made.
WHY ARE YOU HOSTING THIS HERE INSTEAD OF ON A PLATFORM LIKE KICKSTARTER?
The short answer? We aren't looking to crowdfund this set. We feel that Kickstarter and similar crowdfunding platforms are typically asking fans to fund the creation of new content, not something like a collector's edition which may be cool but isn't quite the same as new content. We love and support (and back!) lots of projects for new anime, new dubs, or new forays into the North American market, though!
IF THE SET DOESN'T HIT2,5003,000 UNITS, WILL IT REALLY NEVER BE CREATED?
We're holding ourselves to the commitment that your pledge actually means something and is more than a gesture, so if we don't hit the minimum, we will not create the set.
Fans quickly deduced that the new remaster would be in the original 4:3 aspect ratio,[4] and this was confirmed when the first trailer for the Collector's Edition was released on 05 April 2019.[11]

At the same time, the packaging was revealed and a new FAQ was added to Funimation's dedicated web page:[9][12]
RESERVATION PERIOD:
When you make your reservation, you won't be charged but a credit card is required for pre-authorization.
To thank everyone for their support, those who reserve a set during the reservation period through Funimation will receive a special certificate of authenticity that is individually stamped and numbered!
What if there aren't 3,000 reservations?
The set will not be made, and your pre-authorization will expire. We understand that many fans are perfectly happy with their home video releases of Dragon Ball Z that were previously created and that's cool with us! But if we can't hit 3,000 reservations, we won't be able to create this collector's edition.
Note: If you use a debit card for pre-authorization, it will be treated like a charge to your account. The funds will be withheld until the set is purchased or the authorization expires.
AFTER RESERVATION PERIOD:
What happens after the reservation period?
Following our reservation period, if we meet 3,000 reservations, all fans who reserved a set will be charged the full price of the order. Then the sets will be created! You can expect your order to ship before the holidays.
Is there a maximum number of units that can be fulfilled?
Yes! Due to manufacturing limits, we are only able to create a total of 6,000 sets.

- ↑ A screenshot was posted on Reddit late on the day of the announcement (see right under Notes).[9]
- ↑ Twitter user John Dutton posted the latest known screenshot of the funding progress bar showing that Funimation had no more than 1,822 sets remaining on 01 May 2019, and he claimed to have seen the number drop below 1,500 before the end of the preorder period on the 5th.[16] A Reddit user in the UK posted on 23 November 2019 that their certificate of authenticity was numbered 4,630, making 4,629 the ceiling for US sales.[17]
- ↑ The collector's edition was still available abroad when the individual seasons went on sale, and as late as 24 May 2021, when a reddit user (now deleted) asked whether they should buy the collector's edition or some other version.[24] Both the MangaUK offer and the Madman offer were verified to be no longer available on 08 June 2021.
