K-21 is the Kanzenshuu catalogue number assigned to an unreleased piece of background music (BGM) composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi for the Dragon Ball anime in 1986. The piece debuted in Dragon Ball Episode 1 which was broadcast on 26 February 1986.
Overview
K-21 is an unreleased piece that is rarely used in Dragon Ball. It is given the title "The Face-Fault" on The Suburbs of kenisu's Magicant,[1] the most common source for fan titles of Kikuchi's compositions.
Form and Analysis
K-21 is a 5-bar piece that is entirely composed on a G7 tonality. G7 is the dominant of either C Major or C Minor. The presence of A♭ in the melodic material suggests a resolution to C Minor (since C Major has no flats), but K-21 does not resolve to any key.
The piece opens with playful notes on the xylophone that appear to be doubled with a flute sound, followed by a bassoon response. Then a jazzy clarinet plays the main melody accompanied by a banjo, and the bassoon responds again.
There is no form to speak of, and since the full track is always used, there is no need to break it down precisely to describe how it is cut in each episode.
