Overview

Dragon Ball begins when Bulma comes upon the solitary mountain home of Son Goku in her search for the Dragon Ball in his possession. They get off to a rocky start, but after Bulma explains that she is a girl, Goku invites her to his home. He has never seen a girl, but his Grandpa told him to be nice to them. She tells him that she needs to gather all seven balls to summon the dragon Shenlong, who will grant her wish for a boyfriend; she just needs to borrow Goku's Four-Star Ball when the time comes, and he can use the quest to train his strength. He agrees, and they depart together on a mystical adventure.

Along the way, they pick up new traveling companions. First, Goku carries Umigame to the sea where they meet the Turtle Hermit, who gifts the magic cloud Kinto'un to Goku, and in exchange for a look at her (missing?!) panties, a Dragon Ball to Bulma. Then they encounter Oolong, a shape-shifting pig who uses his powers to terrorize a small village where another Dragon Ball is located; Bulma finds his skills useful and recruits him. Then they encounter Yamcha, the desert bandit with his shape-shifting cat Pu'er, Oolong's schoolmate from Southern Kindergarten. At Mount Frypan, they meet a young girl named Chi-Chi and her father, the Ox Demon King, who trained under Muten Rōshi (the Turtle Hermit) with Goku's Grandpa Gohan. Yamcha and Pu'er follow Goku and the others discreetly at first, hoping to steal the Dragon Balls so that Yamcha can overcome his fear of girls, but they eventually join the Dragon Team as well. Finally, they all encounter the meddling trio called the Pilaf Gang, who also have their sights set on the Dragon Balls.

Pilaf's minions Mai and Shuu steal the Dragon Balls and imprison Goku and crew in Pilaf's Castle. In the end, Oolong saves humanity by wishing for a nice pair of panties before Pilaf can make his wish for world domination. Afterward, Goku and his friends are imprisoned in the castle again, this time sentenced to death by cooking in a small cell with reinforced walls and a tempered glass ceiling. But Goku looks at the full moon and transforms into a Great Ape, the same monster that killed his Grandpa. He breaks out of the cell, freeing everyone else in the process. The Pilaf Gang barely escapes with their lives, and Goku's friends are forced to cut off his tail to end his destructive rampage. When Goku wakes, he has no memory of his transformation, and his friends decide that he does not need to know. The Dragon Team parts ways: Goku goes off to train with Muten Rōshi, while Bulma and her new boyfriend Yamcha go to her home in West City with their shape-shifting companions.
