"Son Goku and Friends" is the first individual tankōbon volume of the Japanese manga series Dragon Ball. This volume comprises chapters 1 thru 11 as originally serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump, 1984 #51 to 1985 #11. The volume was first available in print on 10 September 1985 and released digitally on 12 October 2012. The entire volume is printed in greyscale.
Introduction
The volume's introduction from author Akira Toriyama is printed on the front flap of the dust cover and accompanied by a small color illustration.
The setting of Dragon Ball has a sort of Chinese feel to it, but it's not necessarily limited to China. For the time period, as well, exactly when it takes place is indeterminate. The overall story is very simple, but I'd like to make up the finer details and the ending as I go along. That way, I can enjoy the suspense of wondering what I should do next, as well as the fact that I can draw anything I want to.
— Akira Toriyama
This feature is omitted in the Japanese digital edition. Viz includes their own English translation of Toriyama's words on the first page of their print and digital editions with the illustration printed in greyscale.
List of Chapters
This volume does not omit any chapter title pages. The chapter premiere dates listed below are based on the sale date of their respective issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump, which is when that issue of the magazine officially went on sale.

Volume's Conclusion
The final image serves as an interstitial page between the last chapter and the title page gallery with text informing the reader that the story continues in volume 2. It is included with the text in the Japanese digital version, and without text in the discontinued Viz Graphic Novel edition. It is included after the title page gallery, also without text, in Viz's completed Shonen Jump Graphic Novel edition, as well as in the Shonen Jump digital version that is purchased directly from Viz through their website or the Shonen Jump app. The digital Viz edition available through Kindle/Comixology omits this page.
Notes
- The volume's title page is an original image drawn exclusively for this release, but it was later re-used as the title page for chapter 194.
- This is the only tankōbon volume to feature a conclusion page, just prior to the title page collection, which announces the story will continue in the next volume.
- The chapter title page collection (not shown above) included at the back of the book is the only one to not lead with an illustration that was a chapter title page associated with a chapter within its respective tankōbon volume. Instead it led with a greyscale version of the illustration featured on the cover of Weekly Shōnen Jump 1985 #7.
Q&A Session
This volume contains a short, two-page Q&A session with author Akira Toriyama entitled, "Toriyama-san's Dragon Ball Ask-Me-Anything Corner", where he answered questions sent in by readers. Anyone was able to send in a postcard to the address listed in the book, and individuals whose submissions ran in a subsequent volume were promised a signed illustration from Toriyama himself. This solicitation remained in place in all printings through mid-1995 (the end of the series' run in Weekly Shōnen Jump), after which it was removed.
The Q&A are not included in the Japanese digital edition. They are not included in the Viz English publication at all, print or digital. They are partially translated in Dragon Ball VIZBIG Edition Volume 1 and fully translated in Dragon Ball 3-in-1 Edition Volume 1.
