I19 is the official catalogue number of a piece of background music (BGM) arranged by Shunsuke Kikuchi for the Dragon Ball anime in 1986. The piece debuted in Dragon Ball Episode 3 which was broadcast on 12 March 1986.

Overview

I19 contains a short reference to the opening song (OP) "Mystical Adventure" composed by Takeshi Ike. The full composition is part d of the suite entitled "The Wild Boy", which is track #13 on both the Ongakushū record and disc #2 of the Daizenshuu.

The final piece, I19, was often used in big action scenes where Goku was powering merrily along.
Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z Daizenshuu (2:13d)

I19 is given the title "Goku Fights Fearlessly" on The Suburbs of kenisu's Magicant,[1] the most common source for fan titles of Kikuchi's compositions. The piece was assigned the Kanzenshuu catalogue number of K-37 based on its placement in the series.

Form and Analysis

I19 begins in the key of F Major, but it transitions to the relative minor (D Minor) for a reference to the OP in the middle of the piece. After this reference, it returns to F Major, but then transitions back to D Minor for the ending. The only authentic cadences in the piece are in D Minor, so it is classified as being in the key of D Minor.[a]

Part Bars Details
A1 4 F Major; antedecent + consequent (I-ii-V-I)
A2 4 transition to D Minor (vi—, V-V/vi)
B 6 OP reference + HC back toward F Major (vi—, V)
A1' 6 + active trombone line; each phrase extended by one bar (I-ii-V-I)
A2' 4 + trumpets and piano/marimba scales (vi—, V-V/vi)
C 2 D Minor ending (vi)

HC stands for half-cadence.

Usage and Variations

Below is a table of every instance where I19 is used in Dragon Ball. It is not used in Dragon Ball Z.

Durations are approximate and do not necessarily include the fade times normally included in the full track's duration.

Scene Length and Variations Setting
Dragon Ball Episode 3

After Umigame is safe, Goku fights the Bear Bandit.
0:33: After B, returns to A1 (instead of progressing to A1') and then cuts out shortly after the downbeat of the 3rd bar of A2.
Dragon Ball Episode 56

Goku searches for General Blue in Penguin Village.
0:38: After A1', skips to C.

Notes

  1. Normally, just the fact that it ends in D Minor is enough to classify it in D Minor, but we have broken this rule in several places across the wiki to avoid confusion.
