M724 is the official catalogue number of a piece of background music (BGM) composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi for the Dragon Ball Z anime in 1989. The piece debuted in Dragon Ball Z Episode 1 which was broadcast on 26 April 1989.
Overview
M724 is the first iteration of Kikuchi's Saiyan theme group. Like all BGM in that group, the tonality centers on a G whole-tone scale with a G augmented triad (G+) functioning as the tonic chord, but M724 ends on an E˚7 chord.
The full composition is part a of the suite entitled "Dark Clouds Swirl over Planet Namek", which is track #12 on disc #1 of the Dragon Ball Z BGM Collection. The piece was assigned the Kanzenshuu catalogue number of K-708 based on its placement in the series. Though it is the second BGM in Dragon Ball Z, it is the eighth BGM debuting after Dragon Ball Movie 3.
M724 is given the title "The Vast Expanse Of Space" on The Suburbs of kenisu's Magicant,[1] the most common source for fan titles of Kikuchi's compositions.
