"The Blackness of Space (Awakening of the God of Destruction)" was composed by Norihito Sumitomo for the film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. The track listing is #01 on the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods Original Soundtrack.

Overview

Both this track and "The Blackness of Space (After the Battle)" are comprised of atmospheric synth sounds with no tonal center, meant to evoke the ambient sounds of space.

These two tracks are distinguishable by one particular feature that is only present in this track, and only used in the uncut version of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. At 0:18 in the officially-released version of the track, there is an accelerated electronic rushing or screaming sound created with frequency modulation synthesis that lasts about one second.

In the uncut version of the film, this sound accents the transition from the space imagery into the Elder Kaiōshin's eye. The soundtrack effect is preceded in the film by sound effects separate from the music.

Variations

In the extended version of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, the distinctive electronic sound described in the section above occurs at roughly the same distance from the beginning of the track as released on the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods Original Soundtrack (OST), about 18 seconds in. However, the track as used in the extended version of the film is slightly more than twice as long as the OST version of the track (about 1:03 vs 0:31), though the distinctive sound is only heard once.

The theater version of the track lasts about 0:23 without an extended taper time; the dialogue originally set in the Kaiōshin Realm after the eye transition instead overlaps with the space imagery, and the rushing sound is never heard despite the fact that it is heard within both the first and last 23 seconds of the OST track.

The track is used again, without the distinctive sound, in both versions of the film when the setting returns to Beerus's Palace, after Our Hero, Son Goku (~ "CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA" (Main Title)) and before Beerus's Approaching Shadow (Beerus and Whis), for a duration of about 20 seconds.
