"A Bad Feeling" was composed by Norihito Sumitomo for the film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. The track listing is #02 on the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods Original Soundtrack released on 27 March 2013, and the Kanzenshuu catalogue number is S-102.

Overview

The full version of this track is only heard in the uncut or extended version of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods.

The full track is about a minute long at 17 bars in 4, with a cello melody entering at bar 9 and resolving in bar 17 following the fourth iteration of a four-bar synth progression with light percussion and electric bass.

The third and fourth iterations of the synth progression are omitted in the theater version of the film, along with the entire cello track, reducing the length of the mixed track to 9 bars total. The synth resolves in the 9th bar just as it does in the 17th of the full track, but without the cello.

This shortened theater version is the same version that was released with an extended taper time on the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods Original Soundtrack. Our cut-off point is not scientific and occurs at the transition to Goku who has changed from Kaiō's tracksuit into his normal uniform in anticipation of the chance to fight Beerus.

Usage and Variations

Aside from the two variations of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods discussed in the section above, the track is also altered for usage in the Majin Boo arc of Dragon Ball Kai. One of these three usages was cut in the Japanese domestic version of the arc; Dragon Ball Z Kai Episode 165 was omitted entirely from the Japanese version, where it would fall between episodes 157 and 158.

One Kai usage is longer than the OST/theater version of the track at 12 bars, but the cello track is omitted in all three Kai usages. The 12-bar instance in Dragon Ball Z Kai Episode 161 is the only example overall of the 4-bar synth progression being interrupted (after the third iteration of its third bar) by the final bar of the full track. In Dragon Ball Z Kai Episode 147, the 4-bar progression is interrupted after the second iteration of its first bar by S-263. Aside from these two instances, all other instances including the film and OST versions are comprised of one or more whole 4-bar progressions and the final bar of the full track.

Compositional Analysis

The cello melody is only present in the uncut or extended version of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. The ending resolution is depicted here as a single bar (17), but it could be notated with a ritardando and/or as two bars with a holdover to the next downbeat, or perhaps a single bar with a fermata.

Every usage of "A Bad Feeling" is comprised of at least one full iteration of this track's base layer: a four-bar synth progression with light synth percussion and electric bass. This progression has four full iterations in the longest known version of the track.

The composition's setting in key of F minor is colorful, but unmistakable. The cello melody is written here with the least possible number of accidentals; the leading tone (in this case, E♮ which leads to the tonic F) is the most common accidental in any minor key, but it does not directly act as a leading tone in this melody, nor does it ever occur in an unambiguously dominant harmonic context. Even the tonic (F minor), occurring on the first and third bars of the 4-bar progression, is always colored with non-chord tones.
