K-49 is the Kanzenshuu catalogue number assigned to an unreleased piece of background music (BGM) composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi for the Dragon Ball anime in 1986. The piece debuted in Dragon Ball Episode 4 which was broadcast on 19 March 1986.

Overview

K-49 is short and somewhat transitional in nature; its diatonic setting is tenuous; the beating timpani and the dissonant trombone melody make it a good short piece for threatening situations. It is given the title "Oolong The Terrible" on kenisu's Magicant,The Suburbs of kenisu's Magicant,[1] the most common source for fan titles of Kikuchi's compositions.

Form and Analysis

K-49's setting in F Minor is tenuous. The piece begins with a timpani beat on F, and the first trombone note is A♭, the third of F Minor, but the melody quickly moves into a dissonant relationship with the key of F Minor: A♭-A♮-C-B♮.

A♮ is the third of F Major; C is the fifth of both major and minor; B♮ is a dissonant ♯4, since B♭ is the naturally-occurring perfect fourth in both F Minor and F Major. The ♯4 in any key is the furthest note from the tonic, since every note after that grows closer to the next tonic octave; this dissonant interval is called a tritone, and that is where this short piece ends, with the timpani rolling on F.
