Yūzu is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball franchise, a "Zarbon-type"[1] alien debuting as one of Freeza's miscellaneous henchmen in the 1991 Nintendo Famicom game, Dragon Ball Z II: Gekishin Furīza!!

Biography

En route to Planet Namek, Son Goku comes across Planet Kanassa, which is under siege by a group of Freeza's henchmen, led by G'prae. Goku takes on the group, consisting of G'prae, Yūzu, and two Karbosu. Upon defeating them, a Kanassian thanks Goku, and notices his similarities to Bardock, a Saiyan who attacked their planet twenty years prior; this Saiyan subsequently fought and was killed by Freeza, leaving behind two sons, Raditz and Kakarot. Goku tells the Kanassian his life story, receives a gift of thanks, and continues on his way to Namek.[2]

Yūzu is later fought alongside Appule when fighting Jheese, and alongside Karbosu when fighting Ginyu.[2]

Yūzu has 250 hit points, and a battle power of 15,000.[2][1]

Name

The "Zarbon-type" characters, Zarbon and Yūzu, from the Dragon Ball Z II: Gekishin Furīza!! guide book.[1]

Yūzu is named both within Dragon Ball Z II: Gekishin Furīza!! itself[2] as well as within the game's respective guide book.[1]

The character's name is likely sourced from yuzu, a small citrus fruit and plant, adapting the syllables in katakana as ユズ (yuzu) and enlongating the first syllable as ユー (). Considering the character's design elements, this pun source would nicely fall in line with that of Zarbon: the pomelo, the largest citrus fruit (called ザボン zabon in Japanese) in the family Rutaceae, of which yuzu is also a member. Incidentally, the Chinese source word (柚子 yòuzi) now refers to the pomelo itself.

Yūzu's name is erroneously transliterated as "Yuze" in the game's ending credits.

In the 2000 English fan translation of Dragon Ball Z II: Gekishin Furīza!! by "Omniverse and Vincent", Yūzu is named "Yuz". In subsequent fan translations, ...TBD...

A similar name was later used in 2019 in the Dragon Ball Super manga for Yuzun (ユズン Yūzun), another character with a design intentionally echoing that of Zarbon.

Techniques

Energy Wave

Yūzu's sole ki-based technique is a basic Energy Wave (エネルギー波 enerugī-ha).[2][1] Due to the game's exclusive usage of hiragana and katakana, the 波 (ha) character is rendered in-game as は (ha), though it is spelled out in full in the game's guide book.[1]

Other

While not specifically cited by either the game or its strategy guide, Yūzu can be observed using a variety of basic melee attacks, as well as flight.[2]

Yūzu is not shown in a transformed state a la Zarbon or later game enemies such as Avoga and Mandarin.

Production

As with many characters in video games of the era, Yūzu is a palette swap of an existing character (in this case, Zarbon; in fact, the guide book for Dragon Ball Z II: Gekishin Furīza!! specifically groups Yūzu with Zarbon as a "Zarbon-type"[1]). These types of characters were created to act as general enemies to battle in the lead-up to bigger fights against the named, known characters.

Performance

Yūzu is unvoiced in Dragon Ball Z II: Gekishin Furīza!!

Notable Appearances

Yūzu thus far appears exclusively in Dragon Ball Z II: Gekishin Furīza!! Of note, Yūzu (as well as his cohorts) do not appear in 1992's Dragon Ball Z: Super Saiya Densetsu, a Super Famicom quasi-remake of both 1990's Dragon Ball Z: Kyōshū! Saiya-jin and 1991's Dragon Ball Z II: Gekishin Furīza!! from the Nintendo Famicom.
