This article is about the un-subtitled first release in the "Dragon Ball Z Hit Song Collection" series. For information about the full line of releases, see Dragon Ball Z Hit Song Collection.

"Dragon Ball Z Hit Song Collection" (ドラゴンボールZヒット曲集 Doragon Bōru Z Hitto Kyoku-shū) is the first in a line of twenty releases featuring music from and contemporary with the Dragon Ball Z television series and its respective theatrical films, originally released 21 July 1989 in Japan.

Releases

The first "Hit Song Collection" volume was simultaneously released on both cassette (catalog number CAY-923) and compact disc (catalog number CC-3768) on 21 July 1989 in Japan by Columbia Japan ("Nippon Columbia Col. Ltd.").

The entire "Hit Song Collection" line was re-released on compact disc 20 September 2006 in Japan[1], including the first "Hit Song Collection" (catalog number COCX-33908).

A digital/download release of the first "Hit Song Collection" has not been made available.

Contents

The "Hit Song Collection" series contains a variety of music that can generally be classified into one or more of the following categories:

  • Opening Theme: a song used as the opening music to a specific television series or film(s)
  • Ending Theme: a song used as the ending music to a specific television series or film(s)
  • Insert Song: a song used within the content of a specific television series episode(s) or film(s), but not as the opening or ending theme
  • Image Song: a song that is not directly from the respective television series or films, but is generally produced by the same groups of composers, arrangers, and performers, and may touch upon some of the same underlying themes as the other songs included
  • Character Song: a song that is performed by one of the regular voice actors or actresses from the respective television series or films; a character song may simultaneously also be either an image song or an insert song

The first "Dragon Ball Z Hit Song Collection" contains the first opening and ending themes to the Dragon Ball Z television series, the in-character insert song from the first theatrical Dragon Ball Z film, the insert song from episode 20 of the Dragon Ball Z television series, and six additional image songs.

In particular, the image songs "He's Son Goku" and "Eternal Earth" would go on to be regularly included in future compilation albums and live performances.
