"Son Goku and Friends" is the first individual tankōbon volume of the Japanese manga series Dragon Ball. This volume comprises chapters 1 thru 11 as originally serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump, 1984 #51 to 1985 #11. The volume was first available in print on 10 September 1985 and released digitally on 12 October 2012. The entire volume is printed in greyscale.

Introduction

The volume's introduction from author Akira Toriyama, as printed on the front flap of the dust cover:

The setting of Dragon Ball has a sort of Chinese feel to it, but it's not necessarily limited to China. For the time period, as well, exactly when it takes place is indeterminate. The overall story is very simple, but I'd like to make up the finer details and the ending as I go along. That way, I can enjoy the suspense of wondering what I should do next, as well as the fact that I can draw anything I want to.
— Akira Toriyama

Notes

  • The volume title page is an original image drawn exclusively for this release, but it was later re-used as the title page for chapter 194.
  • This is the only tankōbon volume to feature a conclusion page, just prior to the title page collection, which announces the story will continue in the next volume.
  • The chapter title page collection (not shown above) included at the back of the book is the only one to not feature an illustration that was a chapter title page associated with a chapter within its respective tankōbon volume. Instead it featured a greyscale version of the illustration featured on the cover of Weekly Shōnen Jump 1985 #7.

Q&A Session

This volume contains a short, two-page Q&A session with author Akira Toriyama entitled, "Toriyama-san's Dragon Ball Ask-Me-Anything Corner", where he answered questions sent in by readers. Anyone was able to send in a postcard to the address listed in the book, and individuals whose submissions ran in a subsequent volume were promised a signed illustration from Toriyama himself. This solicitation remained in place in all printings through mid-1995 (the end of the series' run in Weekly Shōnen Jump), after which it was removed.
