The "Classification of Attacks" section of Daizenshuu 4: World Guide (p. 110)

The following skills and techniques appeared in Dragon Ball, either in Akira Toriyama's original manga series or exclusive to Toei Animation's animated adaptation of it. The techniques are organized into three main classification types, and then further divided up into sub-classifications.[1][2][3]

Martial Arts Techniques

"Martial Arts Techniques" (体術技; taijutsu-waza) are essential in the world of Dragon Ball, as many battles are won with the use of these various physical techniques. In particular, during Goku's boyhood when he still couldn't manipulate ki, he thought up various martial arts techniques on his own. These aren't just limited to Goku; even when battles ended up being ultimately settled through ki manipulation techniques, most of the basic fighting was done through the use of martial arts techniques.

Basic Physical Tecnhiques

These are the basic fundamental techniques in martial arts, which are comprised of three basic methods of attack:

  • Punch — techniques where one attacks the opponent with their fist, elbow, or the like
  • Kick — techniques where one uses their leg or knees to attack the opponent
  • Charge — techniques where one accelerates and pitches their entire body at the opponent

Punch

Machine Gun Thrust (マシンガン突き)
User: Tenshinhan
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 128 / Dragon Ball Episode 97

A technique where Tenshinhan unleashes a stream of jabs, similar to how a machine gun fires bullets. Those attacked are not given any time to defend themselves. During the finals of the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai, he drove Goku into a dire predicament with this technique.

Miracle Super Punch (ミラクルスーパーパンチ)
User: Gotenks
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 490 / Dragon Ball Z Episode 258

One of Gotenks' continuous stream of attacks where he unleashes punches and kicks. After launching this attack, Gotenks was told by Majin Buu that he was weak.

Murder Punch (殺人パンチ)
User: Ikose
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 433 / Dragon Ball Z Episode 211

It is a technique that Ikose used against Goten in the 25th Tenka'ichi Budōkai Youth Division, but Goten stopped it with one finger.

Rolling Attack Satan Punch (ローリングアタックサタンパンチ)
User: Mister Satan
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 453 / Dragon Ball Z Episode 224

A technique where Mister Satan approaches his opponent with a forward roll, then jumps up at them and performs a punch. He brought this technique out against Mighty Mask during the Battle Royale of the 25th Tenka'ichi Budōkai finals.

Rolling Thunder Punch (ローリングサンダーパンチ)
User: Gotenks
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 490 / Dragon Ball Z Episode 258

While spinning his arm around and around, he nails his opponent with an intense punch right to the pit of their stomach. It's one of the continuous stream of punching and kicking attacks which he used against Majin Buu in the Room of Spirit and Time.

Satan Miracle Special Ultra Super Megaton Punch (サタンミラクルスペシャルウルトラスーパーメガトンパンチ)
User: Mister Satan
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 454 / Dragon Ball Z Episode 226

The sure-to-kill punch that Mister Satan brought out during his rigged match with No. 18 at the 25th Tenka'ichi Budōkai. Leaping at his opponent, he punches them in the face. No. 18, seeing the punch's extreme weakness, asked "This is your special attack?" After No. 18 lost on purpose, Mister Satan called this technique by a new name, the "Satan Miracle Beautiful Super Bari-Bari Punch".

Kick

Arale Kick (アラレキック)
User: Arale Norimaki
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 83 / Dragon Ball Episode 57

A pro wrestling technique used by Arale, who dashes with all her might and nails her opponent with a jumping kick. She uses this technique it in front of the Norimaki house in Penguin Village against General Blue of the Red Ribbon Army, who stole the Dragon Balls from Goku. After being hit head on with this attack, General Blue is sent flying high into the air.

Dynamite Kick (ダイナマイトキック)
User: Mister Satan, Gotenks
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 396 / Dragon Ball Z Episode 176

A technique where the user dashes forward and nails their opponent with an intense jump kick. The kick seems to have a force comparable to the explosion of dynamite. Though the name is the same, Gotenks' version has far greater force than the one Mister Satan used against Cell.

Great Kick Special (グレートキックスペシャル)
User: Gotenks
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 490 / Dragon Ball Z Episode 258

A technique where Gotenks unleashes an intense kick at his opponent. It is one of Gotenks' many combo attacks. It seems that he names the techniques on the spot when unleashing them.

Recoom Kick (リクームキック)
User: Recoom
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 275 / Dragon Ball Z Episode 64

Without fail, Recoom will strike a pose, call out "Recoom Kick", and then attack. Dashing at super speed, he nails his opponent with an intense knee kick. It is a technique he used against Vegeta on Planet Namek.

Charge

Boar Attack (イノシシアタック)
User: Gotenks
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 490 / Dragon Ball Z Episode 258

A technique where Gotenks rushes with the force of a boar and headbutts his opponent with all his might. It used as part of the continuous stream of attacks that he brought out during his battle with Majin Buu in the Room of Spirit and Time.

Charge (突撃)
User: Son Goten
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 435 / Dragon Ball Z Episode 212

This is a kamikaze attack where the user rises high into the air using Bukūjutsu and then lunges at their opponent, using the falling speed to inflict severe damage. Goten used this against Trunks during their match in the Youth Division at the 25th Tenka'ichi Budōkai.

Recoom Mach Attack (リクームマッハアタック)
User: Recoom
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 280 / Dragon Ball Z Episode 66

A technique in which Recoom strikes a super cool-looking pose, cries "Recoom Mach Attack", and then performs a rushing punch against his opponent. He attacks Goku on Planet Namek with this, but Goku dodges him with extreme ease.

Tenkū Pekeji-Ken (天空×字拳)
User: Namu
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 44 / Dragon Ball Episode 25

A special attack invented by Namu. Jumping high into the air, he crosses his arms and rapidly falls, charging his opponent. With the acceleration from his fall increasing his body weight many times over, without decelerating he cross-chops his opponent in the throat. Those hit by this attack cannot awaken for ten days. To unleash this technique, the kind-hearted Namu closes his eyes in mid-air in order to get rid of distracting thoughts and concentrate his mind, making his heart like an ogre's. During the 21st Tenka'ichi Budōkai, he unleashed it on Goku, who had passed out from dizziness.

Super Tenkū Pekeji-Ken (超天空×字拳)
User: Namu
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 45 / Dragon Ball Episode 25

It is the same technique as the Tenkū Pekeji-Ken, although Namu jumps higher up into the sky than usual and then descends toward his opponent at an increased speed. With the increased speed from his higher descent, this technique produces a destructive power many times greater.

Other

Crushing in Hands (握り潰し)
User: Sergeant Metallic, Vegeta (Ōzaru)
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 58 / Dragon Ball Episode 36

A strength technique that uses a powerful grip to crush the opponent's bones. This is an attack that Sergeant Metallic and Ōzaru Vegeta both used in their death-matches with Goku.

Finger Stab (指突き)
User: Tao Pai-pai
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 90 / Dragon Ball Episode 62

An attack where the user thrusts a strengthened fingertip into their opponent's forehead. The opponent dies before they can even scream. Tao Pai-pai uses this technique in place of payment for the tailor who made his new clothes.

Headbutt (頭突き)
User: Arale Norimaki
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 83 / Dragon Ball Episode 57

A technique that hits an airborne opponent with a headbutt by performing a vertical jump with good timing. It is effective when used in combination with the Arale Kick. In Penguin Village, it sent General Blue flying off into a distant desert.

Combination

These techniques use a combination of the three basic martial arts techniques: punch, kick, and charge.

Hiakyū-Ken (排球拳)
User: Tenshinhan
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 129 / Dragon Ball Episode 98

True to its name's origin, Tenshinhan commences a three stage attack that imitates volleyball. It is a fearsome combo attack: after tossing his opponent high up into the air, he punches them for a receive just as they come down. He then sets his opponent with an intense two-fisted strike before finally jumping into the air and spiking the opponent down into the ground. He displayed this technique at the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai.

Jan-Ken (ジャン拳)
User: Son Goku
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 3 / Dragon Ball Episode 3

One of the few special attacks that Goku uses early on in the series, it is based on the game of "Rock-Paper-Scissors". "Gū" (rock) is a punch, "Choki" (scissors) is an eye-poke, and "Pā" (paper) is a palm slap. Sometimes he will use them separately, but there are also times when he uses them as a combo attack. What's more, there are also times when he will feint by calling out "Gū" but doing a "Pā". It's a respected Kame-Sen School technique which Goku inherited from Grandpa Son Gohan, but he stopped using it after mastering the Kamehameha.

Rōga Fū-Fū Ken (狼牙風風拳)
User: Yamcha
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 8 / Dragon Ball Episode 5

A style of kenpō invented by the desert bandit Yamcha. He moves just like a wolf trying to bite its opponent to death with sharp fangs. It is a rapid-fire attack which uses punches and kicks, letting loose attacks which stress speed, then catching the opponent off guard to smash them with a single powerful, two-handed blow. He first uses this technique to knock out an empty-stomached Goku as he tries to take away his money and capsules.

Shin Rōga Fū-Fū Ken (新狼牙風風拳)
User: Yamcha
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 117 / Dragon Ball Episode 88

After his intense training with Kame-Sen'nin before the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai, the cut and speed of Yamcha's technique became much sharper than before. With the technique's power also substantially increased, he renames it the Shin Rōga Fū-Fū Ken. Yamcha uses this technique during his match with Tenshinhan at the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai, but it proves to be very ineffective against such a skilled opponent.

Ki Manipulation Techniques

"Ki Manipulation Techniques" (気功技; kikō-waza) are attacks that utilize the secret energy that lies hidden within one's body (ki). By utilizing this materialized energy converted from energy inside one's body, one can produce formidable special attacks. Ki is said to be possessed by everyone, although it is seen that not many are able to control it at will. Martial artists in the world of Dragon Ball frequently use many ki manipulated techniques with different names and forms. However, ordinary people have a low degree of familiarity with ki manipulation techniques, and Mister Satan interpreted the ki manipulation techniques that Son Goku used as being mere tricks.

Variations of Ki Manipulation Techniques

The use of ki is not simply used for the purpose of attacking, but can take various shapes based on the person using it. It can be used as a method of movement or to support various attack techniques. Just like the attack-based techniques, these methods of use are also rich with variation.

Unique Techniques

"Unique Techniques" (特殊技; tokushu-waza) are special techniques that do not belong under ki manipulation or martial arts. Not utilizing the power of ki or the physical body (for the most part), these techniques are performed through some external factor, the use of tools, or are unique inherited abilities to a specific individual. Also, the systematization of these techniques has already been decided upon, so users cannot add their own arrangements to these arts, enhance the technique itself, or otherwise change it.

Ability

Shiyō-Ken (四妖拳)
User: Tenshinhan
Debut: Dragon Ball Chapter 132 / Dragon Ball Episode 99

A unique attack technique in which Tenshinhan forms protuberances from his shoulder blades, which he then changes into arms. Tenshinhan is the only one capable of using this technique, which is largely related to the special abilities of his ancestors, the Three-Eyed People. Tenshinhan uses this technique against Goku during the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai. As tis four armed attack leaves no openings, it is hard for an opponent to counterattack.

Detachment

Hypnosis

"Hypnosis Techniques" (催眠術; saimin-jutsu) are used to influence others with either various hand motions or speech. Users of these techniques can put their opponents to sleep or make them see illusions.

Hypnotism (催眠術)
User(s): Jackie Chun

A technique where Jackie Chun sends thoughts into his opponent, using innocent suggestions to create illusions. During the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai, he turned the Man-Wolf back into a human after he had become unable to do so after Jackie Chun destroyed the moon.

Paralysis Arts (金縛りの術)
User(s): Jackie Chun, General Blue, Chiaotzu, Gurd, Kaiōshin

A technique that prevents the opponent from moving their body. Depending on the user, the method of using it and its effect are completely different. General Blue's version was only effective against a single opponent, and it took effect when his opponent stared into his eyes. Chiaotzu held out both his hands, causing immobilizing stomach pain in the targeted person. Jackie's technique was said to poke a pressure point on the forehead, paralyzing the person's motor nerves. Gurd stopped Kuririn and Son Gohan's movement through psychokinesis which he fired from his hands, and his version was effective against multiple people. Also, Kaiōshin's technique was a powerful one that completely stopped Super Saiyan Gohan from moving.

Yoiko Min-Min Ken (よいこ眠眠拳)
User(s): Jackie Chun

A technique where Jackie Chun nails his opponent to the spot with his keen eyes, then lures them to sleep by singing a song. During the finals of the 21st Tenka'ichi Budōkai, he lures Goku to sleep in an attempt to win the championship.

Ninja Arts

The "Ninja Arts" (忍術; ninjutsu) techniques were used by Sergeant Master Murasaki of the Red Ribbon Army. He performs trick attacks using ninja weapons such as shuriken. Because these are fundamentally tool-using techniques, anyone can acquire them if they train.

Art of Concealment (隠れ身の術)
User(s): Sergeant Master Murasaki

A technique Murasaki uses to blend into his surroundings, by either hiding behind a painted cloth or under an artificial rock so as not be seen. During his battle with Goku, due to his own mistakes, he was spotted before he could hide himself.

Art of Division (分身の術)
User(s): Sergeant Master Murasaki

An attack that takes advantage of the fact that Murasaki is part of a set of quintuplets. Whistling to summon the other four, they appear to assist him in trying to trick their opponent.

Tatami Flip (タタミ返し)
User(s): Sergeant Master Murasaki

A counter move where Murasaki vigorously seizes a tatami mat and flips it over, protecting his body from his opponent's attacks. He protected himself from the shuriken Goku threw at him in the 4.5 tatami mat hut on the fourth floor of Muscle Tower.

Water-Escape Arts (水遁の術)
User(s): Sergeant Master Murasaki

A technique in which a ninja disappears by hiding in nearby water. He breathes by sticking a small bamboo pipe out of the water's surface. During their battle on the fourth floor of Muscle Tower, Goku broke through this technique by pouring boiling water into the bamboo pipe sticking out from the lake.

Water Strider Arts (アメンボの術)
User(s): Sergeant Master Murasaki

The remarkable skill of a ninja to walk on the surface of water by wearing round floating boards under their feet. This technique cannot be used without an exceptional sense of balance. Murasaki used it during his famous battle with Goku on Muscle Tower's fourth floor.

Secretion

Sorcery

The dark mage Babidi uses "Sorcery" (魔術; majutsu), which is unlike ki manipulation or physical techniques, as it does not exhaust one's stamina. Babidi can perform simple magic without saying any incantations, but he does say them to use great techniques like altering space.

Explosion Sorcery (破裂の魔術)
User(s): Babidi

A technique where, with a sharp gaze, Babidi transmits his thoughts into his opponent, making the blood within them convulse. This rapidly swells their body and finally makes them explode with a bang. Those attacked die while screaming in agony, with contorted features that look like something not of this world. Babidi is also capable of making only a person's head explode, like he did with the Tenka'ichi Budōkai official. After obtaining powerful energy and returning to Babidi, Spopovitch was killed with this technique, having served his purpose.

Papparapah (パッパラパー)
User(s): Babidi

With a chant of "Papparapah!!", Babidi can change the battle stage to one which those under his rule will find easy to fight in.
