The title page of chapter 18 is included in its original greyscale on page 1. The original color title page of chapter 19 was repurposed as cover art for Dragon Ball Tankōbon Volume 2 in Japan, so the title page for chapter 18 (used properly here) is repurposed as a title page for chapter 19 in that volume and every subsequent Dragon Ball collection.

Interstitial page based on the title page of chapter 32.

There is an interstitial page following chapter 18 (on page 16) that features art taken from the title page of chapter 32.

Cover Illustration

This issue's Akira Toriyama cover illustration was originally drawn for the 1987 calendar featured in the 1987 #05 issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump. This issue contained Dragon Ball Chapter 105, and it was published on 19 December 1986. The illustration gets half-page reproductions in Dragon Ball Daizenshuu 1 ("The Complete Illustrations")[1] and in the Dragon Ball Chōgashū ("A Visual History").[2]

Advertisements

The back cover is a full-color advertisement for the Pioneer VHS releases of the "Namek Saga" of Dragon Ball Z, featuring the latest two installments: "The Ginyu Force" (Vol. 16) and "Super Saiyan!?" (Vol. 17). This advertisement is reproduced on the eighth issue's page.

A complete transcription of the column is below; fan art is omitted. The responses are written by editor Trish Ledoux. (Parentheses) and [brackets] are Viz; {braces} are Kanzenshuu notes.

Ranjan Velu, Age 12
DEAR MR. AKIRA TORIYAMA,
I am writing to you because it's an assignment and our teacher told us to. You're my favorite person in the world to me. You're my hero, you're like a god to me. I'll even die for your Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT.
  If I was the richest man in the world I'd make you richer than me. Could you send me something? I think I'm going to flunk and if you send me something I'll get a good grade.

  Marcos Rosales
  Chicago, IL

P.S. Son Goku is my best cartoon character int he world. Please write back.
We're printing your letter without too many changes (although we did pretty up the spelling a little) not because we want to tease you, Marcos, but because we think, someday, if your friends and family are anything like ours, this will prove to be the best piece of blackmail material against you they'll ever get their hands on. Please don't do anything extreme, for Mr. Toriyama or anyone else. Maybe you haven't thought about it too much yet, but EVERYBODY is a "favorite person" to SOMEBODY in the world. You, Marcos Rosales, are important too.
YOU CAN DO IT!
I think your company is the best. I like Dragon Ball Z, Area 88, and many other books and Viz items.

  I wish there were newer Dragon Ball Z cartoons. Plus, I wonder if you can tell me, how do you guys have so much color in the cartoons? "Well, I know you guys paint them, but, 'Wow!'" One day, I hope I become a great cartoonist.
  Until next time... KAMEHAMEHA!!
  Write back soon. Your friend,

  Mike Zarata
  Wilkes-Barre, PA
Mike sent us not only several illustrations, but a bio of himself, as well. A member of a comic group with his friends, Mike handles the drawing, while his friends Ced and Daniel handle more drawing and the scriptwriting. Mike tells us he's even won a contest for designing the cover of a cookbook, and hopes someday to come work with us as an artist! Work hard for your dream, Mike, and maybe someday, it'll be you designing covers and writing this letter column.
WEIRD... and ORIGINAL
YESSS! Finally, Dragon Ball comics in ENGLISH! I have been a loyal fan for over two years now, since I saw Dragon Ball over summer break.
  Since then, among other items, I found 12 of the 42 original manga (which I love to page through!). I think it's just great that you have not only kept the comic in its original, "unflopped" form, but that you've also stayed true to the {/column}
sometimes-as-naughty-as-it-is-funny plot, as other (similar) forms of entertainment often lack this opportunity.
  The response page is a great way for fans to voice out or just ask a question or two. Kuririn is my fave character because he goes from "sneaky, perverted brat" to arguably the strongest HUMAN and Goku's best friend! Thanks so much for the chance to finally see him as a kid in training, (the animated) DB episodes stopped right before he comes in.
  Pretty please print my letter! I'd love to get a pen pal!

P.S. Is this pic weird and original enough for ya? (I made sure it was A.O.K. for the li'l kids.)
{below: drawing of Goku and Kuririn reading Dragon Ball in bed while Goku thinks of food and Kuririn thinks of sports; Bulma hands the Turtle Hermit a copy and tells him "HERE!!! TRY READING Something Good For Once!" The drawing is signed "Lex" with a drawing of a hand flashing a peace sign and a heart.}}
Only one page for letters this time, DB fans...sorry! Keep those letters and illustrations coming in, though—isn't it wonderful to have a forum where we can exchange these things with one another?

In DB Issue No. 11: Shenlong finally appears—!!! However, just as it seems Oolong (of all people! Oolong!) may have a solution, and entirely NEW problem rears its ugly, huge, HAIRY head...and at the MOON, no less.... KAMEHAMEHA—!
S O M E  N O T E S  A B O U T  F A N  A R T ...
We love the art you send in, but because of space restrictions, there's no way we can use it all! Therefore, to increase the chances of your work being seen, please keep the following tips in mind:
•  Pen works better than pencil.
•  No artwork larger than 8 1/2 by 11. Print your name (and age, if you wish) on the back of your art so we can give you proper credit.
•  Typed letters have a better chance of being printed than hand-written. We stay up all night reading manga and playing RPG's, and our eyes are tired.
•  We realize tracing artwork is fun, but it's not as much fun for the rest of us. Be original! Put Goku and the other DBZ characters in weird situations (but not too weird, please—we've got li'l kids reading). Thanks! {/page}
