Re: Does anyone else not get the argument that Vegeta “deserves” to kill Freeza?

It's just as traditional that the protagonist defeats the antagonist. Besides, the Saiyans weren't oppressed. They were oppressors. Nothing indicates they were anything other than willing participants in the mass slaughter of countless civilizations. I agree with all this. I'm just saying is that V...

Re: Does anyone else not get the argument that Vegeta “deserves” to kill Freeza?

Is it really defying narrative convention when the central protagonist defeats the antagonist? Subverting convention sounds a better phrase. In a traditional story, the prince of the oppressed and slain world would have the most right to kill the tyrant behind the deed. But the prince just isn't th...

Re: Does anyone else not get the argument that Vegeta “deserves” to kill Freeza?

I do agree that given Freeza’s attitude towards the Saiyan race, it does make thematic sense for a Saiyan to be what brings about his downfall, but I don’t see why Vegeta has to be that Saiyan. If anything, I’d argue that Goku being the one to defeat him is much more ironic, given that Goku was a l...

Re: Does anyone else not get the argument that Vegeta “deserves” to kill Freeza?

While Vegeta does indeed have a personal vendetta against Freeza, I can’t say I agree that he “deserves” revenge on him. By all accounts, Vegeta was hardly any better than Freeza when he served under him. He was a sadistic murderer who had no regards for anyone, not even his own comrades. With that...

Don't forget Trunks and Goten, Gohan and Goten, and the infamous threesome fan art.

Re: Is Dragon Ball too closely tied to its own zeitgeist?

What leads you to believe people are more cynical towards an fun adventure series? Speaking on my own view, I'd divide the world into pre-2001, and post 2001 (specifically September). That month's event was a game changer which impacted on the world, and one of those impacts were people finding mor...

Depends on what the various different people - Tien, Chaotzu, Piccolo, and Yamcha - could have done with it.

Re: Is Dragon Ball too closely tied to its own zeitgeist?

I think an issue in general with dragon ball is that much like other manga it is not like american comics. It's a single, long running narrative and that's it. You have no other writers or artists coming in an doing their own thing. It makes it very difficult to grow. If other Artists and writers w...

Is Dragon Ball too closely tied to its own zeitgeist?

DB was a big hit in the late 80s, through the 90s and reaching the early 2000s. It was a major anime hit in both the East and West that not only consolidated it as a major anime, but also increased interest in the anime genre. But that was then, and this is now. Nowadays, it doesn’t really feel the ...

Re: How would you write a better villain for Dragon Ball?

This franchise has run through a distinct gallery of villains: an overlord wannabe (Pilaf), a proud warrior (Vegeta), a biological experiment (Cell), a martial arts master (Tao), a bunch of killer cyborgs, an evil creature (Buu), a god of destruction (Beerus), a jealous angel (Zamasu)... it's hard t...

We're speaking the general regular cast, right? Well, off the top of my head... Masako Nozawa (Goku/Gohan/Goten) Tetsuro Hoshino - Galaxy Express 999 Hinata Urashima - Love Hina Miki Ito (Android 18) Battle Angel Alita - Alita The Fate franchise - Taiga Fujiwara Ako Magami - Project Ako Mami Koyama ...

Well, his berserk transformation was epic, no doubt about it. But I don't think a Saiyan has nearly destroyed himself from power overload as far as I know.

June 24 1987 - the DB episode "The Turtle Hermit's Intense Training" / "The Turtle Hermit Way" was aired on June 25. That was June 25, 1986. Did you make a typo in your birthdate? Re: Would General Blue be considered offensive to the LGBTQ+ community in this day and age?

Camp gay characters aren't really politically correct these days.

But then, a lot of early DB is that way. Master Roshi is seen as offensive, Goku is classified as a mental retard, and so on. It's sad when times change and make your TV shows look awkward.

At most the Z-Fighters' actions amount to protecting Earth from threats to it. But nothing really progressive like rebuilding or development.
