M816 is the catalog number identifying a piece of background music originally composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi for the first Dragon Ball Z theatrical film in July 1989. It was subsequently used in regular rotation as background music in the Dragon Ball Z television series, perhaps most notably for Son Goku's first Super Saiyan transformation.
Debut
M816 is first used in the first Dragon Ball Z theatrical film as Garlic Jr. summons the Dead Zone.
Additional Usage
M816 begins its regular rotation into the Dragon Ball Z television series score with Dragon Ball Z Episode 22, and is last used in Dragon Ball Z Episode 191. Within the series, it is perhaps most notably used during Son Goku's first Super Saiyan transformation in Dragon Ball Z Episode 95.
M816 is also used in the 2008 Jump Super Anime Tour Special as Aka uses the Super Wahaha Wave.
Production
Music for the first Dragon Ball Z theatrical film was recorded 28 June 1989 at Taihei Studios in Shinjuku. This was the tenth recording session following the start of the Dragon Ball Z television series series, which began its music recording on 24 March 1989, normally conducted at Nikkatsu Studio Center.[1]
Release
M816 has been officially released as part of two products:
- In August 1992 as part of a suite of background music for Dragon Ball Z Movie 1 on the first Ongakushū ("Background Music Collection") CD; this disc was re-released by Columbia on 22 September 2004 under the ANIMEX budget brand for ¥1,000
- In April 1994 as part of a suite of background music for Dragon Ball Z Movie 1 on the fifth and final disc of the Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z: Daizenshū five-CD set
