Burp Man is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball franchise, debuting as a wanted criminal and repeat dine-and-dash offender in the thirty-first episode of the Dragon Ball Super television series.
Biography
On his way to Earth to help Bulma and the others, Jaco Tilimentempibosshi receives a Galactic Patrol alert regarding a hit-and-run incident at Galactic Coordinates 6-A-53. The culprit is a wanted repeat offender, Burp Man. Jaco vents his frustration on what he believes to be a meteor, destroying a natural monument in the process; when he receives a call from the Galactic Patrol inquiring about an explosion at his location, Jaco blames it on Burp Man.
Jaco makes his way to Bulma, telling her about Lord Zuno, a mysterious person who knows everything, on a planet just a bit away from Earth. Upon arriving at Zuno's planet, Jaco and Bulma find that even if they were to make an appointment now, the next opening with Zuno would be in seven years. Burp Man walks up, stating that he has an appointment; he had incidentally been waiting seven years, himself. Jaco recognizes Burp Man from the alert earlier, while Burp Man likewise recognizes the Galactic Patrol symbol. Jaco considers arresting Burp Man and taking his place in Zuno's queue, though this would mean the Galactic Patrol finding out who truly destroyed the monument. Burp Man begins to make his way in to Zuno's when Jaco calls for them to stop. Burp Man takes one of Zuno's attendants hostage, saying he cannot afford to get captured before he asks Zuno for a way to dine-and-dash without getting caught. Jaco begins measuring the distance between them, stating he will be able to attack faster than Burp Man can pull the trigger. When Burp Man reacts, Jaco rushes in and knocks him out. Jaco and Bulma are then given Burp Man's place in Zuno's queue.
After their visit with Zuno, Jaco brings Bulma back to Earth. Leaving with some milk and cheese in tow, and saying that he will take vacation to come watch the tournament, it is revealed that Burp Man has been tied up in Jaco's ship the entire time.[1]
Name
Burp Man's name in Japanese combines the word for "burp" (げっぷ geppu) with the English word "man", writing both together in katakana as ゲップマン (Geppuman). The name is perhaps taken from the fact that the character's line of work appears to be dine-and-dashes.[2] The Toei Animation simulcast subtitles, the Funimation dub, and the Funimation subtitles by Steven J. Simmons all use "Geppuman", obscuring the pun.
Performance
Burp Man is played in Japanese by Yasunori Masutani, who had played Aka in the 2008 Jump Super Anime Tour Special along with minor roles in Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball Kai, and elsewhere in Dragon Ball Super before taking on slightly larger roles such as Huwa. In the Funimation dub, "Geppuman" is played by Vic Mignogna, in his last new role for the Dragon Ball franchise.
Notable Appearances
Thus far, Burp Man appears exclusively in Dragon Ball Super episode 31.
