Cranberi is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball franchise. On Freeza Planet No. 79, Zarbon and Dodoria brief certain members of Freeza's army about their impending mission to Namek to secure the planet's Dragon Balls. Cranberi is reprimanded by Zarbon for speaking out of turn, having exclaimed out loud as he finds out that the Dragon Balls are in fact real.[1]

During their raid on Muri's village, Cranberi and other henchmen are attacked by Namekians who are able to suppress their true battle power. One of the Namekians fires a ki blast at Cranberi, who is subsequently knocked backward toward Zarbon, who in turn kicks Cranberi behind him into the ocean, killing him.[2]

When the wish to restore those killed by Freeza and his men is made, Cranberi is restored to life, having been killed by Zarbon (one of Freeza's men). Cranberi uses Vegeta's space pod to escape, vowing not to return to Freeza's army, and remains on the run until captured by the Galactic Patrol.[1]

When Moro regains a bit of his magical power and breaks free from the Galactic Patrol prison, he also helps Cranberi escape. Moro, still watchful and hesitant over the situation, agrees to depart with Cranberi in search of the Dragon Balls. Under their agreement, Cranberi will receive one of the three wishes the Dragon Balls will grant: he wants to be sent to a planet far away where the Galactic Patrol will be unable to pursue him.[3]

On New Planet Namek, Cranberi is shocked to see Vegeta sporting the insignia of the Galactic Patrol and becomes increasingly worried over their safety.[3] When Vegeta and Moro amp up their attacks against each other, Cranberi fears that a potential Moro loss would lead to him being recaptured. Cranberi attempts to blast off by himself in his spaceship, but Moro uses his powers to fling the spaceship back down to the ground, telling Cranberi that he will not lose and to observe from there.[4]

Following Moro's defeat of Goku and Vegeta, Cranberi attempts to explain that he was not trying to escape, but rather he knew Moro would win all along and was simply going to collect the Dragon Balls in the meantime; with some quick-thinking, Cranberi demonstrates how his scouter can locate villages by honing in on the Namekians' energy signature. Moro can sense them without a scouter, however, and suggests they begin with the closest village, and the two depart in Cranberi's ship. Over the next three days, Moro terrorizes three villages and moves on to the fourth. Cranberi stands back as Moro takes on the Namekians.[5]

With Tsuburi's village slaughtered, Cranberi retrieves their Dragon Ball from inside one of the buildings; Moro can apparently sense the Dragon Balls directly. Cranberi and Moro collect six Dragon Balls and head back toward the original village they landed at, which should hold the sole remaining ball. Goku and Vegeta rush their ship, though Merusu jumps in the way and fires, breaking the ship apart, resulting in Cranberi crashing to the ground. Cranberi watches as Merusu temporarily traps Moro long enough for them to bring Boo to the battlefield.[6]

While Boo and Moro fight, Cranberi makes his way off-screen to capture Esca and summon Porunga courtesy of a language-translation connection to his headset. Cranberi remarks that while he may not look it, he used to be an elite member in Freeza's force; a bunch of elder and children Namekians are no match for him. Cranberi uses his first wish to heal himself back to full health. Moro communicates with Cranberi telepathically and urges him to quickly use the second with to restore his magical power to full strength. Cranberi hesitates, reminding Moro of his own second wish to be relocated to a distant planet outside the reach of the Galactic Patrol. Following a clear threat, Moro relents and uses the second wish to restore Moro, who immediately blasts off away from Boo, Goku, Vegeta, and Merusu. As Cranberi is about to finish making his third wish, Moro appears and impales him, saying that while Cranberi has done a good job, he has a second wish of his own.[7]

Name

Cranberi's name spelling of クランベリ (kuranberi) drops the vowel extension on the final syllable in "cranberry" (クランベリー kuranberī).

Viz's English translation of the Dragon Ball Super manga does not reflect this spelling change in the base word, and renders the name as "Cranberry" directly.

Production

Cranberi was originally an unnamed subordinate within Freeza's army, appearing in chapter 247 through his death in chapter 253. The character was later incorporated into the Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc of the Dragon Ball Super manga by Toyotarō, and only confirmed as the same character from the original manga in a two-page bonus chapter within the tenth collected volume of the manga, released in August 2019.

Performance

Cranberi's performance in Dragon Ball Z television series episode 47 is uncredited. In Dragon Ball Kai episode 21, performances for Freeza's subordinates are credited to Hiromu Miyazaki, Tomoyasu Sakata, and Chin'nen Takahashi; Cranberi is likely played by one of these actors.
