Esca is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball franchise, a child Namekian debuting in chapter 44 of the Dragon Ball Super manga in its original "Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc".

Biography

Esca attempts to hide from Moro in Dragon Ball Super manga chapter 44
Cranberi uses Esca to translate into Namekian in Dragon Ball Super manga chapter 48

As Moro invades Planet Namek, the young Namekian Esca attempts to hide inside a home. Moro uses his magical/psychokinesis powers to pull Esca out and begins draining his energy; elsewhere, Namekians notice that Esca is nowhere to be found. Vegeta jumps in, kicking Moro's arm to save Esca, reflecting on his own "troubled history" with the Namekians. Esca departs with the elder as Vegeta takes on Moro.[1]

After Moro defeats both Son Goku and Vegeta and departs, the elder Namekian rushes in with Esca to save them, noting that they are in fact still alive. Back in a cave-dwelling, Esca has used his healing powers — which he admits are not as potent as Dende's — to help Goku and Vegeta, who awaken three days later.[2] Esca is upset with himself for not being stronger, but Goku consoles him noting that he and Vegeta would not be alive were it not for him.[3]

During Boo's battle with Moro, Cranberi kidnaps Esca and summons Porunga with the aid of a visor-esque device connected to Cranberi's own headset which translates his words to Esca's spoken Namekian language. Cranberi is able to wish for his own strength as well as Moro's magical power to be restored before Moro races in to prevent Cranberi from making a third wish. Moro uses the device connected to Esca to make the third wish and severs the connection, resulting in Esca collapsing. After Moro escapes, Goku and Vegeta arrive with Boo in tow, who is able to heal Esca.[4]

Temporarily safe in the spaceship as the battle continues, Esca explains that the elder Namekian named him as his successor, and it is therefore Esca's responsibility to survive this disaster.[5] When the Galactic Patrol receives word of a breakout at the Galactic Prison, Esca remembers Moro's third wish to Porunga was to set every prisoner free. Esca cannot fight, but wishes to help by healing injuries.[6]

Esca is teleported to the Galactic Patrol headquarters via the Dai Kaiōshin (in Boo's body); he later watches Goku spar with Merusu, curiously asking Jaco why they spend time on fitness.[7]

Traveling to Earth to recruit Piccolo and the other strong fighters to battle, Jaco brings Esca along with him; he and Dende are excited to see one another. As one of the last three remaining Namekians (alongside Dende and Piccolo there), Esca is ready to fight for peace and restore Namek.[8] After Earth's fighters are gathered, Esca helps explain what Moro's spaceship looks like to Dende.[9]

Name

Esca's name is likely taken from "Escargot", the French word for "snail"; this is the same source as Cargo's name.

A Namekian named "Escart" (エスカー Esukā) appears in the 2016 Nintendo 3DS video game Dragon Ball Fusions, likewise sourcing their name from the same origin. Escart's name extends the カ (ka) syllable in エスカルゴ (esukarugo) whereas Esca's name retains the syllable as-is.
