Chocolate is a type of food. In the real world, chocolate is made from roasted and ground cocoa beans, and can be eaten on its own or used as an ingredient in other foods or drinks. Depending on the type of chocolate, its flavor can range from bitter to sweet. In Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball, chocolate is first mentioned in chapter 277 and first seen in chapter 472. The first time chocolate appears in any piece of Dragon Ball media is when Ginyu Special Force members Reacoom and Butta make a bet over a chocolate bar in Dragon Ball Z Episode 63.
General Overview
Chocolate exists as a snack on Earth and other planets in the Dragon World, as well as the Demon Realm. It is also used to flavor other foods, such as parfaits and cookies. The magical being Majin Boo has the ability to turn people into any type of food, and he often chooses chocolate when doing so. On Majin Doo, chocolate tends to have the effect of improving his mood and even his power.
Chocolate in Manga
The following are instances of chocolate being shown or mentioned within Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball-adjacent manga series.
Dragon Ball
- When Kuririn and Son Gohan step in to save Vegeta from Reacoom's would-be fatal attack, Reacoom asks Butta and Jheese if he can kill the two little guys too. Butta shouts back that Reacoom can do as he likes, but in return he will have to treat them to chocolate parfaits later.[1]
- After turning Dabra into a cookie and eating him, Majin Boo wonders if he should turn Kaiōshin into chocolate or jelly. Before he can decide, Vegeta shows up to challenge him.[2]
- Trying to lure out Piccolo, Trunks, and Son Goten, the Dark Mage Bobbidi has Majin Boo turn an entire city's worth of people into chocolate.[3]
- Mister Satan attempts to kill Majin Boo by feeding him poisoned chocolates, but Boo likes them and is unaffected by the poison.[4]
- When Majin Boo befriends a dog, he wants to feed it a piece of chocolate (which may or may not be a person), but Mister Satan says chocolate is not good for dogs.[5]
- After Majin Boo splits into a good and evil version of himself, the good Boo tries to turn the evil Boo into chocolate, but the evil Boo blows the transfiguration beam back at the good Boo, turning him into chocolate instead. When the evil Boo eats him, he transforms into a more muscular form.[6]
- Majin Boo escapes from the Room of Spirit and Time, and kills everyone at God's Temple (except Dende, who gets away) by turning them into chocolate and eating them.[7]
- Fighting in the Kaiōshin Realm, the good Boo tries to turn the evil Boo (now in his original form) into chocolate, but the evil Boo dodges the beam.[8]
Chocolate in Anime
The following are instances of chocolate being shown or mentioned in animated Dragon Ball series or films.
Dragon Ball Z
- When Gurd is having trouble against Kuririn and Son Gohan, Reacoom bets a chocolate bar that Gurd will finish the fight within the next minute. Butta accepts and the fight ends up continuing for more than a minute, so Butta wins the chocolate bar from Reacoom.[9]
- Majin Boo turning everyone at God's Temple into chocolate is depicted more explicitly than it is in the original manga.[10]
Dragon Ball GT
- Oob, having merged with Majin Boo, fires a beam at Baby to try and turn him into chocolate. The beam misses, and turns a bunch of regular people into chocolate instead. Oob apologizes and says he will turn them back to normal later. He fires another attack at Baby, who pushes it back towards Oob, turning him into chocolate instead. Baby eats the chocolate Oob, but it does not kill him. [11] Oob later fights Baby from inside his Golden Great Ape body, claiming he let himself get eaten on purpose. After a struggle, Baby spits him out.[12]
Dragon Ball Super
- While the press interview Mister Satan about him receiving the 100 million zenni World Hero Prize, Majin Boo appears and grumpily says he is hungry. Mister Satan tries to calm him down by promising him lots of tasty food, calling out to Videl asking where the chocolate is, but she is out in town with Son Gohan.[13]
- When it is Majin Boo's turn to fight in the Zen Exhibition Match, he is asleep, so Mister Satan gives him some chocolate to wake him up. He says Boo can have more if he "plays" with Basil.[14]
Dragon Ball Daima
- Upon being created, Majin Doo immediately wants chocolate. Majin Koo makes a quick run to the convenience store to get him some, and gets a chocolate bar for himself as well. Doo looks longingly at Koo's bar after consuming his own, so Koo says he can have half of it. He hands him the smaller half, but Doo grabs the bigger half instead. Koo yells at him, but then says he has always wanted to fight over snacks like this. Doo eats the remaining half too.[15]
- During his fight against Tamagami Number One, Majin Doo suddenly stops and declares he wants chocolate. Doctor Arinsu says this is not the time for it, and Doo has a hissy fit. Majin Koo runs off to go get some chocolate again, while the Tamagami keeps attacking Doo. When Koo returns, the chocolate raises Doo's spirits and he keeps fighting until the Tamagami surrenders.[16]
- Later, Majin Koo and Doo run into the Military Police Special Forces at the convenience store. When Doo shows off his chocolate, the Special Forces commiserate about that being all Koo and Doo can afford. They grab lots of snacks for them, but the combined price is way too high even for the Special Forces. They end up paying for just Koo and Doo's two bars of chocolate, and tell them kids should not have too many snacks anyway. Koo and Doo say thanks and enjoy their chocolate.[17]
- When Son Goku and company first meet Doctor Arinsu and her two Majin, Doo introduces himself by saying he loves chocolate cookies.[18]
- Majin Koo and Doo are impressed when Goku uses his Super Saiyan 3 form against Great Demon King Gomah, and Koo thinks Doo can power up like that as well. He tosses him a gigantic chocolate cookie, and Doo grows protrusions out of his head that resemble Super Saiyan 3 hair. His power-up does not last long, though.[19]
- When Majin Koo becomes the new Great Demon King, he prepares a batch of gigantic chocolate cookies for everyone. Kaiōshin thanks him, but says he cannot eat them.[20]
