Dragon Ball Part 1 No. 5 is the fifth issue of Viz's Dragon Ball Monthly Comics, the original English-language printing of the Dragon Ball manga. It was released in July 1998 alongside the fifth issue of the "Dragon Ball Z"-branded chapters. Akira Toriyama's original color pages are printed in greyscale.

Cover Illustration
This issue's Akira Toriyama cover illustration was originally drawn for a fold-out poster in the 1986 "Spring Special" issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump. This illustration gets a full-page reproduction in Dragon Ball Daizenshuu 1 ("The Complete Illustrations")[1] and a 3/4-page reproduction in the Dragon Ball Chōgashū ("A Visual History").[2]

Page 32 is an advertisement for Fist of the North Star action figures from Inteleg International; this advertisement is reproduced on the previous issue's page. The back cover is a full-color advertisement for the Pioneer VHS release of Dragon Ball Z Movie 2: "The World's Strongest"; this advertisement is reproduced on the third issue's page.

| We're getting an unprecedented amount of letters for both our Dragon Ball titles—keep 'em coming! As the weather continues to heat up (even here in San Francisco, which tends to be cooler during summer than most other parts of the country), we're also getting warmer re: the shape of the adventure on which we've just started. What's up with this Yamcha guy, for example? And this Pu'ar—he seems like a smart fellow; what's he doing, sticking around with Yamcha? |

| The Kid Version is Funnier {left: drawing of Gohan} I've been watching (the TV show) Dragon Ball Z since I was about six years old. Now I am ten. Ever since I saw Dragon Ball in comic form, I had to get as much as I could. I think Dragon Ball (kid version) is better because it's funnier. I enjoy drawing and have samples on the back. Most of my friends like Dragon Ball also. | ¡Hola! from México ¡Hola! me llamo Miriam y tengo 15 años y I consider myself a loyal follower of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z since I think they're the most excellent comics that I've read. The TV series, also, are the most fun and entertaining that I've seen, as they have all the aspects which {/column} make them the best: action, fun, love, and the suspense of what will happen in the next episode. The truth is that I consider myself number one fan of the adventures of Goku & Friends, and for that reason, I collect every type of item from thes tory: posters, cards, T-shirts, special collection card stickers...basically, anything having to do with "Dragon Ball." May I be so bold as to ask you a special favor if it's not too much trouble...? I would like for you to send me information about the series Dragon Ball GT since that TV series is not yet being broadcast here in Mexico. I'd like to know what it's all about, and for you to send me info on the series' characters, especially my two favorites: Goku and Vegeta, as I consider them the most captivating characters of the story. | Dr. Slump is My Favorite I'm a real big fan of Japanese anime. I especially love Toriyama's works. I love his style and stories. I've read most of his works: Dragon Ball GT to Dragon Ball 2000, Dr. Slump to Alien Peke. My favorites are Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball Z. My best friend and I have a perfect collection of Dragon Ball Z, the Japanese version. My absolute favorite out of all Akira Toriyama's works is Dr. Slump. I read most of the 19 books when I was in my native country, but it's sooo hard to find in NY. So far, I only found one book (first issue) from my local comic store. When I read the "About the Creator" box in the first issue of Viz's Dragon Ball, I was so anxious to get hold of the new video series coming up. Do you have access/information about retailers that carry the old Dr. Slump or the new TV series? If you do, PLEASE in form me of it. One of Akira's newest works is Alien Peke; it's funny and witty. I've only read the first two issues. Dragon Ball is a great, classic anime. The whole {/page} collection can take up to three shelves of a regular bookshelf. My other favorites are The Poltergeist Report by Yoshihiro Togashi, DNA2 by Masakazu Katsura, and Tenchi Muyō. Is Dragon Ball the only Japanese anime magazine you publish? | Somewhat Bawdier, But... I enjoy reading Dragon Ball to my children. We all love the story. It is somewhat bawdier than we are used to, but we can handle it. | Some of the stuff IS a little bawdier than we as Americans are used to, isn't it. I guess the point to keep in mind is that, in Japan, the Dragon Ball manga series was published in a magazine aimed at high school–age boys—not kindergarteners or elementary school students, meaning that a certain amount of discretion may be called for when sharing the series with younger readers. We're glad to hear you and your family are able to see beyond what is really a very minor part of the series' composition to its REAL attraction—Toriyama's fantastically entertaining writing and art, something which can be enjoyed by ALL ages. |
| You Need Something Catchy and Witty I feel you are doing an excellent job with the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z manga. It is about time somebody introduced American readers to what I consider to be Akira Toriyama's finest work. His ideas of both story and art are masterfully combined within these two manga. I am pleased that you have chosen to keep Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z in their original "unflopped" form of reading "backward to forward." This seems to keep manga creators in Japan happy, which is exactly what we want so that they will continue to create more phenomenal adventures for American readers to enjoy. I must also admit that I enjoy the contrast between the American reading of left to right and the Japanese reading of right to left. The only complaint that I have (regarding) the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z manga is that the proposed "Letter to the Editor" pages have no title. They need something catchy and witty like "The Monkey's Tales." (Goku has a monkey tail and the page would receive tales.) Anyway, keep up the great work.
