The first 7 volumes of each series were released on 16 April 2003.[1]

The Shonen Jump Graphic Novels are the second edition of Viz's English adaptation of the tankōbon, the forty-two collected volumes of Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga. Viz originally published Dragon Ball in monthly comics, and these were collected in Viz's first edition of the tankōbon, the Viz Graphic Novels. The first edition was discontinued after volume 10 of each series was published; the Shonen Jump Graphic Novels were completed and are still in print.

Following the notoriety of the 1996 Dragon Ball Z anime in the United States, Viz opted to separate the manga according to the anime branding, publishing sixteen "Dragon Ball" volumes and twenty-six "Dragon Ball Z" volumes. Since the sixteenth tankōbon volume ended with chapter 192, and the "Dragon Ball" portion of the series ended with chapter 194, Viz altered the chapter contents accordingly for Dragon Ball Volume 16 and Dragon Ball Z Volume 1. Otherwise the Viz volumes mirror the original tankōbon volumes' content except for the Toriyama Q&A at the end of each volume. These were partially translated in the Dragon Ball VIZBIG Edition, and fully translated in the Dragon Ball 3-in-1 Edition.[a]

The first seven volumes of each series were in stores 16 April 2003,[1][2] and four more volumes of each were released in July 2003. New volumes were released in a staggered schedule two months thereafter until both series were completed.[b]

Notes

  1. The Dragon Ball 3-in-1 Edition is the first Viz edition to use the original chapter numbers (1-519). Each 3-in-1 volume contains three tankōbon volumes, but those volumes are given the original numbers (1-42) internally, and the volume split between 16 and 17 also occurs at chapters 192-193 like the original version.
  2. Viz's own website is unreliable for release dates; for example, they list the first seven volumes of each series as being released on 06 May 2003,[3] though we have contemporary documentation that demonstrates they were released on 16 April.[1] We have verified certain other release dates from contemporary advertisements.
  3. The original Japanese volume contains chapters 181-192.
  4. The original Japanese volume contains chapters 193-204.
