"The Tenka'ichi Budōkai Begins!!" is the third individual tankōbon volume of the Japanese manga series Dragon Ball. This volume comprises chapters 25 thru 36 as originally serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump, 1985 #25 to 1985 #36. The volume was first available in print on 10 June 1986 and released digitally on 12 October 2012. The entire volume is printed in greyscale.

Introduction

The volume's introduction from author Akira Toriyama, as printed on the front flap of the dust cover:

One night about half a year ago, I took in a stray cat. It was a rainy night, so I took pity on it and figured that I would at least let it stay in the house until the rain let up.

But it was a really friendly, cute cat, so we ended up keeping it as part of the family. It's a jet-black cat, so its name is Koge ["char"]. As a result, my assistant Matsuyama-kun, a major cat-hater, is in a state of terror every time he comes over to work.
— Akira Toriyama

This feature is omitted in the Japanese digital edition. Viz includes their own English translation of Toriyama's words on the first page of their print and digital editions with the illustration printed in greyscale.

List of Chapters

This volume does not omit any chapter title pages. The chapter premiere dates listed below are based on the sale date of their respective issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump, which is when that issue of the magazine officially went on sale.

The interstitial page advertises volume 4:

CM Time
Kuririn: "Sorry to interrupt for this commercial break, but Dragon Ball comics volume 4 is currently on sale to rave reviews. Check out the Tenka'ichi Budōkai as it heats up!"
Goku: "Watch us in action!"

Viz adapted this page for the July 1999 issue of their monthly comics, preserving its original placement in chapter 33. Kuririn tells readers to check out the "next red-hot issue of Dragon Ball", and this text is preserved in all subsequent Viz editions.

  • All of the supplemental images shown above are original illustrations drawn exclusively for this release by Akira Toriyama.

Q&A Session

This volume contains a short, two-page Q&A session with author Akira Toriyama entitled, "Toriyama-san's Dragon Ball Ask-Me-Anything Corner", where he answered questions sent in by readers. Anyone was able to send in a postcard to the address listed in the book, and individuals whose submissions ran in a subsequent volume were promised a signed illustration from Toriyama himself. This solicitation remained in place in all printings through mid-1995 (the end of the series' run in Weekly Shōnen Jump), after which it was removed.

The Q&A are not included in the Japanese digital edition. They are not included in the Viz English publication at all, print or digital. They are partially translated in Dragon Ball VIZBIG Edition Volume 1 and fully translated in Dragon Ball 3-in-1 Edition Volume 1.
