J17-B is the official catalogue number of a piece of background music (BGM) composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi for the Dragon Ball anime in 1986. The piece debuted in Dragon Ball Episode 3 which was broadcast on 12 March 1986.

Overview

J17-B marks the debut of Kikuchi's Turtle Hermit theme. The full composition is part b of the suite entitled "Funky Turtle Hermit", which is track #06 on both the Ongakushū record and disc #2 of the Daizenshuu.

J17-B, the second piece included in this track, was used as the most popular of the Turtle Hermit–themed pieces in the show. Even in his debut scene, J17-B is the backdrop as he intones, "Once upon a time, there lived a man named Urashima...".
Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z Daizenshuu (2:6a)

J17-B is given the title "Kame Sennin's First Scene" on The Suburbs of kenisu's Magicant,[1] the most common source for fan titles of Kikuchi's compositions. The piece was assigned the Kanzenshuu catalogue number of K-39 based on its placement in the series.

Form and Analysis

J17-B is in 4 at about 74 beats per minute (BPM).

Part Bars Details
A1 4 clarinet melody; antecedent phrase; HC (I, V)
A2 4 consequent phrase; PAC (I, V-I)
B 4 bassoon melody; HC (vi-V, ii-V)
A2' 4 A2 repeats but the violin end changes + profound ritardando; PAC (I, V-I)

HC stands for half-cadence (ending on V) and PAC stands for perfect authentic cadence (ending on V-I, root position chords, tonic in soprano voice, approached step-wise).
