K-11 is the Kanzenshuu catalogue number assigned to an unreleased piece of background music (BGM) composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi for the Dragon Ball anime in 1986. The piece debuted in Dragon Ball Episode 1 which was broadcast on 26 February 1986.
Overview
K-11 is a 16-bar piece in F Major featuring a bassoon melody and a less prominent clarinet melody. It is given the title "Trouncing Happy" on The Suburbs of kenisu's Magicant,[1] the most common source for fan titles of Kikuchi's compositions.
Form and Analysis
K-11's harmony alternates between the tonic F major and E-flat major (-VII); the bassoon melody is in lydian mode when the harmony changes to E-flat. The piece could potentially be notated much more simply in 4 with swing 8ths but it is not in a typical swing style so we have notated it in the more precise 12/8 (4 beats of three 8th notes each, instead of the more common 4 beats of two 8th notes each).
| Section | Bars | Details |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | 4 | bassoon melody: 2-bar antecedent phrase (I); 2-bar consequent phrase (-VII) |
| B | 4 | bassoon and clarinet call and response (2 bars of I; 2 bars of VII) |
| A2 | 4 | bassoon melody: 2-bar antecedent phrase (I); 2-bar consequent phrase (VII) |
| A' | 2 | clarinet takes and abbreviated version of the melody (one bar of I; one bar of VII) |
| End | 2 | one bar of F; one bar of reverb (not notated in transcript) |
In A', the clarinet takes up the melody for two bars and the bassoon takes an accompaniment role; the penultimate bar is the sustained final note, and the final bar is mostly reverb, possibly written as a rest.
Usage and Variations
