K-10 is the Kanzenshuu catalogue number assigned to an unreleased piece of background music (BGM) composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi for the Dragon Ball anime in 1986. The piece debuted in Dragon Ball Episode 1 which was broadcast on 26 February 1986.
Overview
K-10 is used throughout the Dragon Ball anime as a tension piece. It is given the title "The Horrors Within" on The Suburbs of kenisu's Magicant,[1] the most common source for fan titles of Kikuchi's compositions.
Compositional Analysis
K-10 is seven bars long in slow 4 (about 50 beats per minute). The piece is predominantly atonal, featuring dissonances throughout and ending on a C♯˚7 chord with no clear suggested resolution.
The composition technique is (like M201) close to serialism, but not quite 12-tone. Every tone is ultimately used except for G♯ (A♭). Seven tones (F♯-F-D♯-C♯-E-A♯-D) are used before one is repeated (C♯), then three more tones (B-A-C) are used before the C-F♯ tritones build in the bass leading to the ending, where G (the 11th tone) appears in the final C♯˚7 chord. Fully diminished seventh chords are the most dissonant naturally-occurring diatonic chords, built of two equidistant tritones.
There is no real form to speak of; a simple bass melody progresses toward a simple yet tense and dissonant climax.
