Dragon Ball Z: Densetsu no Chō Senshi-tachi ("Dragon Ball Z: Legendary Super Warriors") is a card game/role-playing game developed by Flight-Plan and published by Banpresto for the Nintendo Game Boy Color released 30 June 2002 in North America, 09 August 2002 in Japan, and 08 November 2002 in Europe.

The game would be the first and only Dragon Ball game developed for the Nintendo Game Boy Color, as well as the first and only handheld title developed by Flight-Plan and published by Banpresto for the series.

Gameplay

Battles in Dragon Ball Z: Legendary Super Warriors are fought using a turn-based card system, each card representing a move. Attacking moves can range from basic punches and kicks to finishing moves like the Kamehameha and Genki-Dama, whereas defensive options include evasion moves and temporarily boosting a character's attributes.

Winning battles earns characters experience points. Every time they level up, one of their attributes can be increased permanently. Cards also get unlocked along the way, allowing players to choose strategically which ones to include in their deck of 20 cards.

Game Modes

  • Continue (つづきから Tsuzukikara): Continues from where the player left off in the story mode.
  • Multiplayer (つうしん Tsūshin): Allows players to battle against each other or trade cards by using a Game Link Cable. Available after reaching Chapter 11 in the story mode.
  • Battle (バトル Batoru): Allows players to select any cards and characters they have unlocked to battle against randomly selected CPU opponents. Unlocked by repeatedly pressing the Start button at the "THE-END" screen following the story mode credits.
  • New Game (はじめから Hajimekara): Starts from the beginning of the story mode. Overwrites any existing save file if progress is saved.

Battle Menu

  • Character status (キャラクター Kyarakutā): Examine the attributes of characters and equip special moves.
  • Deck (デッキ Dekki): Edit a deck of 20 cards.
  • Team composition (へんせい Hensei): Select which character to use for battle. This is usually one character, but can occasionally be two characters on a team.
  • List (リスト Risuto): Browse a list of all the cards the player has unlocked.
  • Save (セーブ Sēbu): Save progress in the game.
  • Exit (とじる Tojiru): Close the menu screen to go into battle.

Story

The story mode of Dragon Ball Z: Legendary Super Warriors covers the events of the Dragon Ball Z television series, split up into 30 chapters of one battle each and accompanying cutscenes.

After an introductory cutscene that briefly describes the history of the Dragon Balls and Son Goku, the gameplay section of the story picks up after the battle against Raditz, with Son Gohan's training under Piccolo functioning as a tutorial for the game. The rest of the story follows more or less Gohan's perspective throughout the battles against the Saiyans, Freeza, Cell and Majin Boo, although there are a few fights he is not present for.

The character selection per battle is limited throughout the first playthrough, but players can choose any character they have unlocked for any battle in subsequent playthroughs.
