| Graphic Novel | Dragon Ball Volume 2 |
Dragon Ball Part 1 No. 7 is the seventh issue of Viz's Dragon Ball Monthly Comics, the original English-language printing of the Dragon Ball manga. It was released in September 1998 alongside the seventh issue of the "Dragon Ball Z"-branded chapters. Akira Toriyama's original color pages are printed in greyscale.

This issue's title page including staff credits is printed on page 2 of the paper pages, instead of in the usual place on the inside of the front cover. Page 1 is a custom title page for the issue, using the same art from Dragon Ball Chapter 30 that is used for the background of the regular title pages (including the one on page 2). This compensates for chapter 13 having twelve pages instead of the usual fourteen.

The original title page of Chapter 12 is omitted. The title page of chapter 13, printed in its original greyscale, is repurposed as a title page for chapter 12. This repurposing began with the Japanese publication of Dragon Ball Tankōbon Volume 1 and persists in every edition of the manga, leaving chapter 13 without a title page. The title page of chapter 12 was not reprinted until the Dragon Ball Digest Edition Legend 1 was published in 2016.
Cover Illustration
This issue's Akira Toriyama cover illustration was originally drawn for the title page of Dragon Ball Chapter 1, published in the 1984 #51 issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump, released on 20 November 1984. The title page gets full-page reproductions in Dragon Ball Daizenshuu 1 ("The Complete Illustrations")[1] and Dragon Ball Daizenshuu 2,[2] and a half-page reproduction in the Dragon Ball Chōgashū ("A Visual History").[3] The illustration is otherwise widely used, serving for example as the table of contents illustration for Akira Toriyama - The World.[4]
Advertisements
The inside of the front cover is an advertisement for Fist of the North Star action figures from Inteleg International; this advertisement is reproduced on the fourth issue's page. Page 32 is an advertisement for the September release of three Viz debut graphic novels: Strain, Dance till Tomorrow, and Banana Fish.
The back cover is a full-color advertisement for the Pioneer VHS releases of the "Namek Saga" of Dragon Ball Z, featuring the latest two installments: "Betrayal" (Vol. 12) and "Zardon" (provisional title for Vol. 13, "Collision"). This ad is reproduced on the page for "Dragon Ball Z" Part 1-7.
Letters Column
This issue's letters column is printed left to right on pages 31-30. There is a standard solicitation for reader letters on the inside of the front cover. A complete transcription of the column is below; fan art is omitted. The responses are written by editor Trish Ledoux. (Parentheses) and [brackets] are Viz; {braces} are Kanzenshuu notes.

RELATIVE SUCKITUDE I have been a fan of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z ever since it came to the U.S. What was one of the main things that attracted me to the DB series was its artwork, but when I take a look at the letters page, the pictures SUCK. So, I have decided to send in a DB drawing every Friday. Thank you for taking the time out to listen! Sincerely, Jourdan McLain Redford, MI P.S. I'm only 14 years old. {drawing of Goku with the text: "AKIRA RULES"}
Jourdan, Jourdan...how can you be so polite (as in when you thank us for taking time out to listen), and then be so rude (by saying that other people's drawings "suck")--? Aside from the fairly obvious fact that "suckitude" is relative, it just isn't cool to say unkind things about artwork that people spend a lot of time and love doing...even if you are "only" 14 years old. As it turns out, we think the drawing you've sent in is pretty good, but, you know, there's no guarantee everyone will agree with us.
THOSE CARTOONY DRAGON BALL COMICS I'm a first-time fan of the Dragon Ball Z comics and movies, but I knew about the creator of them and his other works. Akira Toriyama is very talented and I especially love the cartoony Dragon Ball comics. They are hilarious! I hope this doesn't trouble you but I would appreciate it, if you print this letter, to answer a few of my questions: (1) Are there really 42 volumes of Dragon Ball? (2) How long is the Dragon Ball Z series going to last on TV, and when will we see it on cable? (3) Will Dr. Slump come to the U.S.? Or has it? (4) How many Dragon Ball movies are there? (5) When do we see Bulma's parents and the other young Dragon Ball kids'? {/column} Sorry for all the questions. A big fan, Charlie Roland Martinez, GA
(1) Japan-only compiled manga volumes? Yep; (2) As long as you keep watching it, and, No idea; (3) Manga or anime?; (4) Counting TV specials, annual "Anime Festival" entries, and others, Too many; and (5) Bulma's dad, Dr. Brief (that's right, as in the men's underwear) makes his first appearance in Japanese tankôbon or "compiled manga volume" No. 6.
ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS... My name is Michael Duong and my sister is named Nancy Duong. Me and my sister are 9 years old. Our birthday is January 30, 1989 and we are twins. We are big fans of Dragon Ball. Please send us some Dragon Ball cards and two Dragon Ball cases to put my cards in and a set of Dragon Ball playing cards and the Dragon Ball card game. That's all. Your friends, Michael and Nancy Houston, TX
We'd be happy to be your friends, Michael and Nancy, but unfortunately, we're not Santa Claus. We can't send you the things you've asked for. If you write us back and ask an adult to help you make a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE), however, we'll see if we can't find SOMETHING for you and your sister.
THAT JAPANESE STYLE I've recently become a Dragon Ball fan. At first I only knew of the cartoon. I love it! Then, a while later, I saw an ad in Wizard magazine promoting the new Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z comic books. As soon as I could, I went to my local comic shop and ordered them. I was so excited when they arrived. I love the Japanese style, not to mention the art. I have a few questions, however: (1) Are there any DB and DBZ toys on the market? If so, how can I get them? (2) Are you going to reprint all DB and DBZ comics in English? Also, if so, when? (3) How did you come up with the idea of the two comics? (4) A friend of mine when {sic} to Spain and picked up a DBZ book there.... I would like to know if there are other books like this in English I can purchase. {/page} Again, I love the Dragon Ball series. Don't ever get rid of it! Michael Lynch Kenosha, WI
Michael addressed—as many of our readers do—his letter to Akira Toriyama directly. For the record, we have to tell you that, although we suppose it's not entirely impossible, we don't think it too likely that Toriyama-sensei has the time to read the many, many foreign-language versions of his works that are published around the world. We here at Viz—who only do the English version published in the U.S.—are more than happy to answer your questions when we can, but we really can't promise a response from Mr. Toriyama personally.
DB in ENGLAND I'm one of your biggest fans. I love Dragon Ball and was waiting for it to come to England for ages, until your comics started to come to Plymouth in England. All my friends are now interested in Dragon Ball. But my question is: Do you have any idea if Dragon Ball will appear on English TV? If you do, please print it in your next issue, or write to me. Thank you for your time. Scott Smith Age: 11 Plymouth, England P.S. Is it possible to obtain Dragon Ball videos in England?
Dragon Ball is one of the most popular animated series in the entire world, so we're not surprised to hear you and your friends in England like it, too. As for it airing on British TV, we suggest contacting your local TV stations; for videos, try the local comic and other specialty shops. Good luck from your fellow and sister fans in the U.S.!
WHEN ARE THE SERIES GONNA STOP? I think Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z rule! I have a subscription to them both. But why haven't I seen Emperor Pilaf or something like that? When are the series gonna stop? DBZ isn't even through "Arrival." Please keep makin' 'em, I'll keep buyin' 'em. Why doesn't j-pop.com and the other Viz websites have all the stuff the catalog does? I'm ordering all the videos there are in the catalogs I don't have. You should sell the Guyver tapes in the catalog. Owen Elliott Columbia, South Carolina
Emperor Pilaf will be making his appearance by and by; be patient. As for online shopping, any items you can't find on j-pop.com or the other Viz websites can be acquired by either requesting a catalog online (www.viz.com), or by writing Viz Shop-By-Mail • P.O. Box 77010 • San Francisco, CA 94107.
QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS I love both Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z comics. I also love both of the cartoons. But the reason I'm writing is, I have a couple of questions: {/column} (1) You know the one-inch figures that come with the comics? How many different ones are there? I have eight different ones. (2) Is there going to be a Dragon Ball GT comic book series? (3) I can't find Dragon Ball comic #1. Is there some way to send money for it? I really want to get it, and I've looked everywhere. (4) Are there going to be more DB and DBZ comics after the two series? (5) Please! Please! Please! Publish this letter and the picture I drew. Sincerely, a loving fan, Josh Perez Sandy, UT {drawing of Goku} P.S. Is there going to be a fan club? Is there one already?
(1) Dunno. Including them as a "free bonus" with the first issue of the comic was something the marketing department dreamed up; far as we know, what ones we had are all gone; (2) Not that we know of; (3) Sure. Try Viz Shop-By-Mail, the contact addresses of which are listed above; (4) Absolutely—the "X-issue series" bit just means the ones on the current schedule, and there's bound to be more; (5) Dô itashimashite (you're welcome). —Editor
Next Time: As father and son—Goku and Gohan—begin their training at last, we meet at last not only the venerable Kaiô-sama, the so-called "Lord of Worlds," but Bubbles, a kind of lord in his own right! O-tanoshimi ni (look forward to it!)...and...KAMEHAMEHA—!

We love the art you send in, but because of space restrictions, there's no way we can use it all! Therefore, to increase the chances of your work being seen, please keep the following tips in mind: • Pen works better than pencil. • No artwork larger than 8 1/2 by 11. Print your name (and age, if you wish) on the back of your art so we can give you proper credit. • Typed letters have a better chance of being printed than hand-written. We stay up all night reading manga and playing RPG's, and our eyes are tired. • We realize tracing artwork is fun, but it's not as much fun for the rest of us. Be original! Put Goku and the other DBZ characters in weird situations (but not too weird, please—we've got li'l kids reading). Thanks! {/page}
