"Dragon Ball VIZBIG Edition Volume 1" is the first volume in the Dragon Ball VIZBIG Edition, Viz's first omnibus publication of Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga. This is the only Viz edition to include any of the original color pages as printed in Weekly Shōnen Jump, though some color pages are still printed in greyscale in the VIZBIG edition. This volume comprises the first three Shonen Jump Graphic Novel volumes that Viz had already published, covering chapters 1 through 36. The volume was first available on 03 June 2008.

Cover Illustration

This volume's Akira Toriyama cover illustration was originally drawn for the cover of the 1986 #37 issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump, which went on sale on 12 August 1986 and featured the original printing of Dragon Ball Chapter 87. The Weekly Jump cover is reproduced in the 30th Anniversary Dragon Ball Super History Book.[1] The illustration itself gets a full-page reproduction in Dragon Ball Daizenshuu 1 ("The Complete Illustrations")[2] and a quarter-page reproduction in the Dragon Ball Chōgashū ("A Visual History").[3]

The drawing on the back cover is taken from the title page of chapter 24.

List of Chapters

The serial dates listed below are based on the sale dates of their respective issues of the English-translated Viz Monthly Comics (top) and the original Japanese serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump (bottom).

The color column addresses all of the pages that were originally published in color in Weekly Shōnen Jump. If the original color pages are printed in color here, they are marked FC (Full Color) and LTD (Limited Color). If they are printed in greyscale, they are marked GRY. If there is no designation in this column, then the pages were originally printed in black and white.

Some title pages are included inline with the chapter, some are included in the Title Page Gallery at the back of the volume, and others are omitted altogether. The page numbers are given where they are included, along with the color status as described above.

IN THE NEXT VOLUME
Goku and Kuririn have made it to the Tenka'ichi Budōkai, the world's top martial arts tournament! Plus, Goku faces one of the most baffling opponents of all—a mysterious old coot named "Jackie Chun"!

Only the first printing includes the date. All later printings read "AVAILABLE NOW".

Notes

  1. The original title page for chapter 12 included advertisements, and since it was the first chapter in the second collected volume, the title page for chapter 13 was repurposed as a title page for chapter 12 in Japan. This change carried over to later editions including the English translations published by Viz.
  2. The original title page of chapter 19 was used as the cover illustration for the second collected volume in Japan, and the title page for chapter 18 was repurposed as a title page for chapter 19. This change carried over to later editions including the English translations published by Viz.
