Guarana is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball franchise. A strong member in the remnants of Freeza's army, Guarana appears exclusively in the fourth chapter of the Dragon Ball Super manga, originally published 19 September 2015 in the November 2015 issue of Shueisha's V-Jump magazine.

Biography

Guarana and his subordinates discover a Super Dragon Ball in the fourth chapter of the Dragon Ball Super manga[1]
Guarana and a subordinate look outside their ship to see Champa and Vados in the fourth chapter of the Dragon Ball Super manga[1]

Somewhere far away in the universe, Guarana and the staff aboard his ship come across a Super Dragon Ball. Guarana demands that this be reported to headquarters, but they are interrupted when they spot two individuals — Champa and Vados — outside of the ship. Guarana and his subordinates watch in horror as one of the two individuals raises a finger.[1]

Out on Planet Freeza No. 17, Tagoma reports to Sorbet that Guarana's ship has been taken out by some unknown force. Shisami is in disbelief, noting that Guarana is the second-strongest in the remnants of Freeza's army.[1]

Name

Guarana's name is likely taken directly from the Brazilian "guaraná" fruit (ガラナ garana), or more specifically the natural energy drinks infused with the caffeine producing guaraná seeds that have become quite popular in Japan. This fits with Akira Toriyama's explanation that all of Freeza's henchmen are items that go inside a refrigerator.[2][3] The name is spelled identically in Japanese between the character and the plant's seed.

Viz's English translation of the Dragon Ball Super manga does not reflect this identical source spelling and renders the name instead as "Garana", a direct romanization from the katakana spelling.[4]

Production

Guarana appears exclusively in the fourth chapter of the Dragon Ball Super manga, in scenes that furthermore are exclusive to the manga adaptation of this storyline, separate from the original 2013 theatrical film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and 2015 theatrical film Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F', as well as its then-concurrent version in the 2015 Dragon Ball Super television series. These events bridge the Battle of Gods re-telling, the Resurrection 'F' re-telling, and the Super-original "God of Destruction Champa arc".

Performance

Thus far, Guarana appears exclusively in the Dragon Ball Super manga; as such, no voice has been assigned.
